While these series have attracted a lot of attention on streaming platforms, Sanderson believes that there are significant challenges in adapting epic fantasy for the screen. In a recent interview, he opened up about what he thinks is missing and shared his concerns about the way streaming platforms approach these big stories.

What does Brandon Sanderson think about epic fantasy adaptations on streaming services?

Brandon Sanderson has recently opened up about the challenges of adapting epic fantasy novels into TV shows. His works, such asMistbornandThe Stormlight Archive, are known for their vast, complex, and carefully curated plots. With the rise of streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon, many fantasy novels have been adapted for the screen.

But Sanderson believes viaPolygonthese adaptations have not done justice to the genre. His main criticism is thatshows likeThe WitcherandThe Rings of Powerhaven’t been able to properly handle the epic scale of the stories they’re based on. He points out that even with big budgets, these shows have failed to capture the magic of other successful fantasy adaptations, likeGame of ThronesorLord of the Rings.

One of Sanderson’s biggest concerns is that streaming services haven’t figured out how to bring epic fantasy stories to life. He believes that the way these shows are made doesn’t suit the grand scale of the stories they want to tell.

James Gunn’s Superman: New Rumor Is Another Slap in the Face to Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel Loyalists

Sanderson specifically mentionsThe Witcher, where actorHenry Cavill’s deep passion for the source material played a big part in the show’s success. He added,

With an unlimited budget and unlimited creative control, I think I could make something really good. But who knows? I mean, The Rings of Power essentially had that, and it’s not very good. It’s fine, but is it the thing that you want? I mean, I really think the key member is that visionary filmmaker. Epic fantasy has responded poorly to too much oversight from above. I think that was The Witcher’s problem.

However, Cavill left the show after creative differences with the producers. Sanderson states,“You had that visionary: It was Henry Cavill,”highlighting the fact that he was someone who truly understood the story and wanted to stay faithful to it.

He also suggested that when a show doesn’t have that kind of visionary leadership, it can struggle to capture the heart of the original material.
