The much-anticipatedBorderlands 4is being touted by developer Gearbox as its “most ambitious [game] to date,” which is pretty accurate, considering the sheer amount of features thatthe newest entry to this classic looter-shooteris set to have.
It has been a running gag in the gaming community thatbeing able to pet an animal is crucial to a game’s success.

Borderlands 4: Major Updates Revealed in New PlayStation Showcase
The looter-shooter legend is making its big comeback with Borderlands 4 from Gearbox, set to release on September 12 this year.
Many have noticed a massive cat during one of the trailers, and might have wondered whether it’s friendly. After getting a chance to previewBorderlands 4, I can safely say that yes—you’re able to pet the kitty and then some.

Borderlands 4 Features Pettable Allies And Deployables
As is tradition,Borderlands 4features a Siren amongst its four badass Vault Hunters;Sirens are powerful individuals with unique and often supernatural abilities.
As a Siren with an undeniably badass goth aesthetic, Vex has three main action skills: Dead Ringer, Incarnate, and Trouble, all of which provide a myriad of playstyles you can explore.

As you may have already seen in the promotional material, Trouble is Vex’s familiar–a giant saber-tooth cat that automatically attacks enemies and can be evolved into its Badass version Big Trouble via her Action Skill.Trouble’s damage type also adapts to the weapon that Vex is wielding.
As long as you have “Phase Phamiliar” equipped, petting Trouble triggers an adorable animation where the big kitty rolls on its back and purrs.

Trouble isn’t the only creature you can pet. During another part of the preview, I managed to find a Legendary Tediore shotgun that deploys a small turret affectionately called the “husky boi.”
Due to restrictions during the preview event, we were not able to capture footage of the co-op segment, which was when I found the Tediore shotgun. As such, we do not have any images of said weapon.

Since their introduction in the firstBorderlandsgame, they have always been a paragon of lightning-fast reloads.
InBorderlands 2,Tediore weapons became throwable weapons as improvised grenades, dealing additional burst damage at the cost of the remaining ammunition in the magazine.
Borderlands 3and onwards added more functionality to Tediore guns, turning them into walking turrets, homing missiles, and bouncing grenades when thrown.
Borderlands 4will undoubtedly expand this feature, and the “husky boi” is most certainly a prime example of the creativity that will be infused into its weapons, turning a simple Tediore weapon into a cute, temporary ally that you can pet.
When asked about pettable creatures inBorderlands 4, Anthony Nicholson, Gearbox’s Senior Project Producer, said the following:
you’re able to pet Vex’s familiar Trouble, and we are a team that loves our guns, so you may be able to pet a few if you are feeling dangerous.
If we are to take Nicholson’s words at face value, then it’s safe to assume that Trouble and “husky boi” are not the only pettable creatures, and some might even trigger unique effects when petted.
Until then, just being able to pet any creature is ample cause to be excited aboutBorderlands 4.
Borderlands 4is set to release on September 12th, 2025.
