On April 22nd, the newest update forWorld of Warcraft, the 11.1.5 Content Update, was released. It offers a host of new features, including the anticipated return of Horrific Visions, a new leveling event for alts, and more.

There’s just one problem, though: some of the most anticipated content in this update isn’t available just yet. It’s something many peoplenoticed earlier this month. The staggered release schedule and time-gated content artificially expand the relevancy of the patch. What’s the point of a patch day release when you may’t even do most of the content?

It’s a sentiment that theWorld of Warcraftcommunity all shares, according to a now-deleted post on the World of Warcraft subreddit. This should be an exciting time for the now 20-year-oldMMORPG, but fans aren’t happy.

“If the trade off for content that isn’t heavily timegated over 7 weeks and works on launch is us cutting out the .5 or .7 patch and just getting more things included in that 1 mid tier patch - I am perfectly fine with that,” the postsaid. “I would enjoy it so much more. If this is going to be the norm for mid-tier patches, I would rather you just do 1 mid-tier patch and put everything into it instead of 2 mid tier patches and trying to do a blistering pace of 1 update every 8 weeks. This is clearly not sustainable.”

Blizzard Is Releasing World of Warcraft Updates At A Faster Pace, But At What Cost?

Despite the April 22nd release date for World of Warcraft Patch 11.1.5, most of the content available in the patch won’t be available until later dates. Here’s the full release schedule:

After a bidding war with other Korean companies, Nexon may be taking on StarCraft and Overwatch.

The concept of “timegating” content isn’t new in World of Warcraft.Blizzardhas employed this practice in the past on several occasions. The first I remember is during Wrath of the Lich King, when raid bosses for the Trial of the Crusader raid weren’t all available at launch. The five bosses would be released on a weekly cadence.

Seeing this timegating on a .5 update, though, is entirely new, and it’s disappointing to see.Blizzardhas wanted to release content updates on a faster cadence, but if this is how it works, what’s the point?
