Kazue Kato is the proud creator ofBlue Exorcist, one of the most trending Shonen manga at the moment. The anime series has already received three seasons and will receive the fourth in October 2024. Amongst the hype, fans want to know more about the series’ formation and the author behind it.

To his credit, Kato appeared in an interview with a French blog, Pop Up on France TV Info, and talked about everything that built his road to becoming a mangaka. He is described as a true otaku even by his publisher, and his views on other franchises are evident in the interview.
Kazue Kato’s Inspirations to Become a Mangaka
Inthe interview, Kazue Kato opened up about his work life, meetings with editors as well as his inspirations during childhood. The author revealed that he has been reading manga ever since he learned how to read in primary school. He was around 7-8 years old at the time.
When theBlue Exorcistcreator became a teenager, he began reading Shonen Jump, which evidently came much later in his life. The author admitted that at the time, he loved reading the magazine when he was going to eat ramen at a restaurant. Why such a specific setting to read manga?

Well, manga has become a constant source of comfort in our lives, and while eating, many prefer to watch or read something wholesome simultaneously. For Kato, it must have been the same.

The author also admitted that his favorite series used to beYu Yu Hakusho. He also likedSlam Dunk, which according to him, was published during the Golden Age of Jump. Other than these, he also likesAkiraandOne Piece. But don’t think Kato is a pure Shonen fan just becauseBlue Exorcistbelongs to the genre. The author is also a fan of the Shoujo genre and especially likedBoku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte (Please Save My Earth), a manga by Saki Himawari serialized between 1986-1994.
Blue ExorcistAuthor Chooses His Best Manga of All Time
Kazue Kato was also asked about his favorite manga, and his answer wasOne Piece.
I would sayOne Piecebecause you can reread it several times, because the story and dialogues are so rich. There is a lot to read in Eiichiro Oda’s work and, with each reread, you discover new things.

Among the plethora of Shonen manga, Kato choseOne Piece,a series that is considered one of the Big Three. On the other hand, the author also did not mention eitherNarutoorBleach. One Pieceindeed has its own magic, which captivates readers. Eiichiro Oda has created a vast world with plenty of well-fleshed-out characters in each arc.

You will find plenty of debates online about the best Shonen manga, and fans are ready to die defending their favorites. So Kato’s answer is bound to p*ss off some people. Yet.Eiichiro Oda’s planningis inexplicable and keeps drawing new readers everyday despite its 1000+ chapters.
The beauty ofOne Piecelies in the Easter Eggs that have been generously sprinkled in the story. You will not understand their importance until much later in the series, which makes re-reading it to decipher the clues a thrilling experience. Kato is probably referring to the same when he claimed it can be read several times.

Blue Exorcistis available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
