Few, if any, movies found as much success as Wicked didat the box office in 2024, yet even as the calendar flips and Wicked becomes available for digital purchase, Jon M Chu’s masterpiece continues to break records.
Wicked Moves to Third on List of All-Time Grossing Universal Movies
Despite being in its eighth full week at the box office and competing against juggernaut titles likeSonic the Hedgehog, Wicked cannot stop making money in theaters, bringing in an additional five million over the weekend. Adding in that fresh five million pushes theWicked domestic total to an astounding $459 million, solidifying the film on the podium of highest-earning movies from Universal all-time at third. Wicked recently passed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial which garnered $439 million after its 1982 release. The only Universal films to earn more are The Super Mario Bros. Movie at $574 million and Jurassic World at $653 million.

Wicked in a Tier of Its Own
Even before Wicked cemented its place as an all-time-grossing Universal film, it was breaking records for musicals.Back in late December,Wicked passed Mamma Mia! as the highest-grossing movie based on a Broadway musical,with over $611 million dollars worldwide.Now with the film looking to break the $700 million ceiling, Wicked could spend years as the greatest Broadway musical to ever hit the box office.
Wicked’s time in theaters is finally coming to a close with the film now available on digital platforms, but there are still more accolades for the Wizard of Oz prequel to earn with awards season in full swing.Wicked already earned a Golden Globefor Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, while being nominated for three more, including Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
Luckily for big-time Wicked fans, there won’t even be a long wait until the sequel, Wicked: For Good comes out. The film currently has a November 21st release date for this year, and reportedly will feature a lot ofsolo screentime for Elphaba and Glinda. Regardless of the plot, Wicked: For Good has an astronomically high bar to clear once it takes a crack at the box office at the end of 2025.
