If there’s one thing that drives every TV show fan crazy, it’s waiting for the next thing to drop. But the worst part? Waiting for the book that inspired a favorite show. How can the episodes keep coming if the story hasn’t even been finished in the books yet?Game of Thronesfans have been dealing with this for years, and most of them seem to have finally had enough.

George R. R. Martin has been asked about this countless times, but there’s never been a clear answer as to why it’s taking him so long to finish just one book. This has dragged on for so long that people still joke about it and criticize him to this day.

Why Can’t George R. R. Martin FinishThe Winds of Winter?

Game of Thronesbecame the most-watched series in the world when it was at its peak, which putGeorge R. R. Martinin the spotlight.

The first seven seasons of the series followed the book saga pretty closely, but when it came time to wrap things up in season eight, there was no source material to go off of. This happened in 2019, and incredibly, the situation hasn’t changed at all since then.

So, the creators and producers,David BenioffandD.B. Weiss, had to come up with an ending for the series using a lot of creativity. The result wasn’t exactly satisfying, and for those who had followed the story through the books, frustration came quickly.

In the end,Game of Thronesleft many people with mixed feelings: it started as a much-loved show but ended up being seen as a bit of a letdown.

But why did all this happen? In the first four seasons, George R. R. Martin was acting as a producer and consultant. However, he stepped back from that role because he wanted to focus onThe Winds of Winter. By the fifth and sixth seasons, he was already out of the loop.

As time went on and the book still wasn’t finished, fans started reacting, but it didn’t seem to speed up Martin’s writing. In 2022, he took to hisblogto explain a bit more about his writing process, which might shed some light on the long delay:

What I have noticed more and more of late, however, is my gardening is taking me further and further away from the television series.

Game of Thronesis incredibly complex, so rushing the writing process would likely lead to the same problems the series faced in the end. The result would probably be a disappointing, rushed plot.

Even so, he went as far as updating the public on every detail of the process, from how many pages and chapters he had written to shifting release date predictions, which were delayed multiple times. The situation became so frustrating for those following his work that it led to a flood of criticism. (viaThe Week)

George R. R. Martin’s Work Process Even Became A Skit On Stephen Colbert’s Show

It didn’t take long for Martin to become a target of public frustration, and the backlash was so intense that it even turned into sketches on talk shows. OnThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the author was interviewed, and the introduction poked fun at the issue of him working on new projects without finishing what he promised.

Jokingly, Colbert complains about the show’s script, saying it was written by Martin with some old jokes. He responds that he had nothing better to do, adding that it would serve as a prequel to the show’s monologue — playfully alluding to theHouse of the Dragonseries.

Since 2010, when he started writingThe Winds of Winter, Martin has made many changes, according to him. Curiously, during this time,Fire & Blood— which inspired the spin-off — was published. This came after he had announced that he wouldn’t work on anything else until he finished the long-awaited book.

From that point on, his reputation suffered, and fans began to question his credibility and professionalism. Even though heclaimedearlier this year that he had already made significant progress on the book, positive reactions have since dwindled.

The Winds of Winterwon’t be the end of the saga, though. The next project to wrap up theGame of Thronesstory is called A Dream of Spring. Despite this, fans have learned to take his word with a pinch of caution.
