In the wide variety of anime genres, Shonen is the one targeted primarily at young male characters. These characters have gained immense popularity for their unique designs and backstories that fans can easily relate to.

However, since the dawn of this infectiously popular genre, it has evolved significantly, with each series reflecting changes in its art style and animation techniques. Though it is noticeable how Shonen has changed significantly, it continues to develop, where a new title,Hell’s Paradise, has defied to challenge societal norms.
While it features high-octane battles with an emotionally gripping storyline, it has featured one unique trait that not only defies the stereotype while committing to the greater good of the fan-favorite genre.

Hell’s Paradisechallenges Shonen’s stereotype with Gabimaru’s unique trait
With anime becoming a mainstream form of entertainment in recent years, it has remained popular by featuring lofty goals that sometimes can feel unreal. However, this notion has beenchallenged by Yukinobu Tatsu’sDandadanand another equally popular series following the same path.
Hell’s Paradise: Jigokurakuis the newest anime adaptation in the genre, which follows the tale of Gabimaru, the Hollow, who gets a failed assassination attempt. However, he can overrule capital punishment by finding the elixir of life in Shinsenkyo, a land that draws the boundary between hell and heaven.

The newest addition in the genre not only features themes of friendship, effort, and battles, with an erotic and grotesque world with breathtaking animation. Fueled by Studio MAPPA’s unique art style and vision, it has quickly become popular for its protagonist, who stands out from the masses.
During an exclusive interview viaReal Sound, the series’ director, Makita Kaori, was present and was asked the“kind of character”Gabimaru is.

“That was the last bit of his arrogance”: Tite Kubo is a Mad Genius for One of the Most Brutal Byakuya Scenes in Bleach That Started His Redemption
The director stated how our main character exhibits a rare trait for a Shonen manga character, which makes him such a“fascinating character.”She said,
Gamimaru works hard for his wife, which is rare for a shonen manga character. Gamimaru is also surprisingly honest, listens carefully to what those around him say, and is unwavering. He’s also adaptable, and gradually we see that he’s a proper human being. I think that’s what he’s like deep down, so I think that’s what makes him such a fascinating character.

She reinforced that despite being a“married man,”he has a personality, which is the kind of protagonist, that would make him so appealing to the young fans of the series.
Makita Kaori sheds light on what makes Gabimaru so lovable
Despite being a ruthless killer, the protagonist has earned the love of the Otaku Community, where his reputation precedes him, which has made him equally alluring among the young and old fans of the work.
What added to his fame was his wife, Yui, who brought out a more naive and loving side of the Hollow, and he loved her ardently for this. Thus, making a dark character that will pique everyone’s interest.
In the same interview, the director stated how this trait has made Gabimari extremely lovable, and his actions are the core reason that makes him so appealing. She said,
That’s right. I think he’s a character that everyone will like. I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t like Gamimaru. He’s a pleasant character to watch, and his actions are always centered around his wife, so he’s not easily swayed, which is why he seems so appealing.
She further mentioned the qualities that went into drawing a character like our hero and how she thought of one notion that makes it so special.
After all, what needs to be depicted in the anime is “going home for his wife,” so I basically think of him and his wife as a set. When I’m cutting the storyboard, I draw it so that when Gamimaru appears, the shadow of his wife flickers.
Nevertheless,Yuji Kaku’swork has been a masterpiece, where theAborification adds to the series’ fame, making it a magnum opus that can’t be missed at all.
Hell’s Paradisecan be streamed on Netflix.
