Despite the ever-evolving movie landscape in Hollywood, there are many things filmmakers cannot replicate anymore, at least when it comes to practical effects. The rise of computer-generated imagery has made life easier, and Danny Boyle knows that this would come in handy if he ever wants to do a similar scene from his 2002 film,28 Days Later.
Even before the fame ofThe Walking DeadandZombieland, the film is widely considered a precursor to the zombie apocalypse genre. The story follows a London bike courier who wakes up from a coma and finds his city deserted, all the while trying to run from zombie-like creatures.

The September 11 attacks occurred during the filming ofDanny Boyle’s28 Days Later, and he noted how security measures were very high and strict at the time. The magnitude of the tragedy prompted London officials to keep their guards up during that period. However, the director recalled how lucky he was to be able to shoot one of the scenes that would probably have him arrested if he had done it today.

What they did required a bit of trickery as flipping a double-decker bus on its side outside Downing Street was quite a tough challenge.Cillian Murphy’s character would have to pass by these overturned buses, and line producer Robert How said that the Westminster Council wouldn’t allow such a thing.
In the movie’s DVD commentary (viaSlashFilm), Boyle explained their situation:
We did this before September 11, and to put a bus on its side in Whitehall, literally just outside Downing Street where the Prime Minister residence is, you just wouldn’t be allowed to, I don’t think.
They got away with it only by a hair, and it was all because of production designer Mark Tildesley’s inventiveness. He told Boyle that he could “get it in and out of there in 15 minutes” – they went to the spot at four in the morning to do the filming while the world was still asleep and did it as fast as they could.
Looking back, Boyle thinks of that moment in his career as ridiculous. Well, nothing sounds weirder than towing in and turning over buses in front of the Prime Minister’s residence and expecting not to raise an alarm.

Boyle reflected on the success of28 Days Laterand why he thinks it resonated with a lot of people. He said that it had such an impact because “it was the first one out of the block that touched, not directly but aesthetically and morally, some of the residue of what 9/11 had done to us,” viaInverse.

The movie was able to capture the view and feeling of looking at cities that initially felt so immense and powerful, and then suddenly, they became vulnerable.
On another note, the director reunites with writerAlex Garlandfor the upcoming sequel,28 Years Later, withMurphy reprising his role as Jim.
