Valve has come up with a new strategy to take on Microsoft and other Steam Deck competitors running on Windows 11 at the moment. It seems like Valve is on a quest to standardize the SteamOS across devices for better performance.

If the strategy is executed to perfection, then there is a high chance that we will soon see Microfost’s PC gaming market take a big hit. This is a response to the growing competition in the handheld gaming market, especially by devices like ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, which run on Windows 11.

Windows 11 Might Not Be The Best Alternative For Handheld Industry And Valve Is Taking Advantage of It

Windows 11 is not well optimized to run on gaming handheld consoles since its general design leads to inefficiencies, low battery life, and performance bottlenecks, as opposed to SteamOS, run by the famous Steam Deck, made specifically for gaming needs.

On top of not being well optimized, Windows 11’s UI is also not tailored to suit the needs of small devices, which causes a lot of problems in navigation, whereas SteamOS offers a console-like interface that is easy to access and navigate. Even the licensing cost of Windows is too high, making these devices extremely expensive for consumers.

Valve is currently tryingto push SteamOS for third-party devicessuch as ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, which still run on an unoptimized Windows 11, and even thePlayStation Portal is lagging behind. If the same gets successfully implemented, then the tides will shift in favor of Valve once again.

SteamOS is a Linux-based operating systemthat is well-optimized to offer a clean user interface suitable for gaming needs. It is lighter and more resource-efficient, which leads to better performance and battery life. Optimization of operating systems is the key difference here. This is the only place where Windows 11 seems to be lacking at the moment. Microsft has not taken any action in the direction of making its operating system optimized for handheld consoles.

Adopting SteamOS Might Be The Right Way Forward

The biggest concern of players when it comes to a Linux-based operating system is whether or not it will be able to run games built for Windows. The short answer is yes.Valve’sproton compatibility layer ensures that the games built for Windows run smoothly on its operating system.

Devices like ROG Ally are packed with impressive hardware. However, the only thing that bottlenecks their performance is the operating system these consoles run on. According to Valve, SteamOS will help unlock the full potential of these devices.

If this strategy proves to be successful, then Valve will stand strong as a central pillar of the PC gaming ecosystem. Microsoft might end up losing a huge share of its market.

Even thoughIntel and Tencent are trying to create the ideal competitorfor Steam Deck, SteamOS currently has an edge over almost every handheld console available, so it remains to be seen how it goes for the duo. What do you prefer, Windows or SteamOS? Let us know in the comments below.
