It is no secret that the Marvel Studios before the inception of the mega Marvel Cinematic Universe was once a studio impending disaster. And so in the face of greater challenges and greater problems, one has to make great sacrifices, even if those sacrifices would come back later to bite them. This eventually led to the rights of numerous iconic Marvel characters being handed off to other studios. While Sony got theSpider-Verse, Fox got theX-Men, and Universal got characters like The Hulk and Namor.

And so Marvel Studios’ gravest mistake of selling the distribution rights of Hulk has come back to haunt them. Despite being a fan-favorite character and the founding Avenger, Hulk has never gotten a solo project. And it seems it might not anytime soon in the near future.
Hulk Might Never Have His Solo Project Due To Marvel’s Mistake
The issues regarding the ownership or distribution rights of the Hulk, one of the biggest characters in the whole Marvel-verse, originated in the 1990s. Long story short, it was Universal who held the complete rights to the character in the 1990s and later, but then in 2003 when the studio failed to come up with a sequel to 2003’sHulk, Marvel got back the rights to the character.

However, Marvel only retained the rights to the character with the distribution rights of any solo Hulk project still in the hands of Universal. While it is widely speculated that the rights must have reverted by now, there seems to be no solo Hulk movie starringMark Ruffaloin sight (viaScreen Rant,The Direct, andLooper).
After stating there won’t be a standalone Hulk movie since Universal didn’tknow how to play well with Marvelin 2017 (viaVariety), Ruffalo yet again recently confirmed there isn’t any plan for a Hulk solo film at the2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

While he did not reveal the reason why since he has apparently been forbidden by Marvel to talk about it, many reckon that it must be because of Universal or some other right issue. And as soon as his statement went viral on the internet, Marvel fans were quick to express their disappointment.

Fans Disappointed Over Hulk Never Having A Solo Film
Out of the original six Avengers, Hulk is the only one who does not have any solo film or project. Despite the rumors of the distribution rights of the character’s solo project having reverted to Marvel Studios or Disney, Ruffalo’s recent comments only seem to affirm fans’ fear that it must be somehow because of Universal Studios, which eventually comes back to Marvel selling those rights.

And so this is how many Marvel and Hulk fans reacted on the internet:
I think we all knew that. Universal will never let those rights go, and the character isn’t popular enough for Marvel to seek out the amount it would take to buy them back

Not marvel’s fault. It’s actually universals property for solo films and trust me. Unlike Sony, they aren’t partnering up with Disney.

While most fans were critical of Universal and others were disheartened to never get a solo Hulk movie, certain fans allege it is Disney’s fault for the character not having any solo project (viaX). With Ruffalo confirming that he would next be seen inCaptain America: Brave New World, guess fans will have to remain content with that.
