In development for the past 18 months, Alterra aims to combine Animal Crossing’s social sim and community aspect with Minecraft’s building mechanics. Players will inhabit a home island filled with interactable NPCs known as Matterlings. Henderson’s sources say that players will be able to leave their home island to visit other worlds that will consist of different biomes, Matterlings, enemies, materials, and more. You’ll also be able to interact with other players on these other islands.

10 Game Worlds That Would Be Lovely To Visit

There are several amazing video game worlds, but these are some of the best ones that would just be lovely to explore.

This is where elements fromMinecraftcome into play. Players will be able to build whatever they’d like with gathered materials. Henderson gives the example of traveling to the ice world if you’re looking to build something with a wintery vibe. Presumably, if you want a more jungle look in honor of the upcomingDonkey Kong Country at Universal Studio Japan’s Super Nintendo World, you’d travel to a jungle world.

Henderson’s story doesn’t give any other specific biome examples other than the the ice world. Still, we imagine there will be a focus on all the various elements and esthetics typically seen in video games.

Regarding enemy design, Matterlings reportedly will be visually inspired by Funk Pop figures. They’ll feature large heads inspired by fictional creatures combined with real-world animals.

Who at Ubisoft Is Leading Development on Alterra?

Development for Alterra is being helmed at Ubisoft Montreal. Patrick Redding, known for his work as the Creative Director forGotham Knights, is Alterra’s Creative Director. HisLinkedIn profilementions he has been working on an unannounced project since June of 2023. Presumably, that’s been Alterra.

Fabien Lhéraud, a long-time Ubisoft veteran, is the game’s Lead Producer. HisLinkedIn profilestates that he’s been working on an unannounced project for four years. It also mentions that the title is a “next-gen” release, so it may be a while until Alterra sees the light of day.
