The Apothecary Diariesis a whirlwind of emotions we love to sit through but some of the most unexpected characters had a connection we didn’t expect at all. Most of the characters ofThe Apothecary Diariesare lovable and humorous but two people in particular make everyone’s blood boil, Lakan and Fengxian. But since the narrator unquestionably takes Maomao’s side, it’s mostly her perspective. However, when these two finally had their story revealed and reunited, there wasn’t a dry eye tuning intoThe Apothecary Diaries.

Fans did a complete 180 on their perception of Lakan, whose eccentricities and face blindness did not bode well in his favor. Maomao felt abandoned by the man who was revealed to actually have no choice in the matter. Most were easier on Fengxian but didn’t love her treatment of Maomao, who craved her love and affection. However,The Apothecary Diariesdid not hold back on their emotional backstory.
Lakan and Fengxian: The Doomed Lovers ofThe Apothecary Diaries
At first, Lakan is introduced as a pretty creepy and annoying person in Maomao’s life. His way of speaking always suggested something nefarious and it didn’t help that Maomao felt abandoned by her biological father for years. He tries to make it up by being doting, while still being less of one to her than her uncle and adoptive father, Luomen. However, what she never knew was that he was exiled to a military regime for being close to Luomen who was branded a criminal. All of this miscommunication culminated in a series of tragic events.
The Apothecary Diaries Creator Tested Shojo Boundaries by Reversing Maomao and Jinshi’s Roles in the Series
Fengxian was a high-standing courtesan and played Go and Shogi with Lakan. They took a risk by consummating their love but without knowing what the future held for Lakan, her reputation and job fell as being pregnant was looked down upon in her line of work. She, unfortunately, contracted syphilis from a client on the streets when she was barely surviving. She held hope that Lakan would return for her but even he had no clue how long he’d be exiled for. This betrayal and illness made her abuse Maomao, to the point of mutilating her finger.
Lakan only returned after 3 years. However, when he makes a bet with his daughter and loses, he has to redeem a courtesan. Meimei and Maomao plot for him to choose Fengxian and in a twist of events, he still remembers her. There wasn’t even one dry eye in the Verdigris House, let alone the fans, when the two reunited in a way only true lovers would and it was the highlight of the first season.

Did Maomao’s Parents Actually Redeem Themselves?
Lakan truly had no choice in the matter of being exiled. He tried to make it up to Maomao in the best way he knew, even if it wasn’t always the right move to make. In terms of face blindness, while fans find it disturbing, it’s an actual condition people have. Still, the man actually recognizes those important to him. He hasn’t actually done anything that needs redeeming but perhaps Maomao will begin to warm up to him.
The Apothecary Diaries May Fear Cancellation After Season 2 Despite Gaining Immense Popularity Because of an Inescapable Shojo Curse
On the other hand, Fengxian’s treatment of Maomao was cruel and downright abusive. Fans are torn between condemning her and sympathizing with her. Mixed feelings can be natural with a complicated character like her and she’s undeniably well-written. She’s a tragic character through and through but she will need to do a lot to earn the forgiveness of the fans.
