The mystery behindHalo 3removing match-wide proximity chat from ranked mode has finally been solved, but the answer being a special kind of toxicity was unexpected. Toxicity in gaming is an unfortunate consequence of having an anonymous identity that you can hide behind; it was no different inHalo 2.

Halo 3’s lead designer was horrified at the gender-based toxicity he witnessed

While exchanging insults has become commonplace, theHalo 3lead designer was so horrified by the extreme harassment his female counterparts faced in the game’s predecessor that he removed an entire communication mode.

Halo 3’s Lead Designer Removed Chat Mode Because of Disgusting Toxicity

The decision to remove proximity chat in ranked matches was made by Jaime Griesemer, the lead designer ofHalo 3,who was deeply troubled by the level of abuse female gamers were experiencing.

True story. I had a group of women show me what happened to them in Halo 2 because of proximity chat, we cut it from Halo 3 the next day.https://t.co/DPwXMApMyd

Proximity chat, which allows players to hear and communicate with others near their character’s location, enhances immersion and is a fun feature in any game.

People are demanding Riot to take stricter action against such toxicity

Unfortunately, it also opened the door to verbal harassment. While anyone can be on the receiving end of toxicity, female gamers, in particular, were subjected to a ton of sexist remarks, derogatory comments, and threats of violence.

Under the thread, the developer goes over many of the arguments people hold against his decision, with one of them accusing him of “white-knighting” for the girls.

People accusing me trying to white knight, the girl I was dating at the time was the most filthiest trash-talker of all time (asshats would have to mute -her- for abuse) and she -hated- that we turned off proximity chat. 😂

He explains that his partner at the time was a worse trash-talker than anyone, and he still made the decision to turn it off.

He also says that making it an option simply wasn’t possible, as people who need it for a competitive advantage could not benefit from doing so.

“Halo 3 had proximity chat, idiot!”Please take it up with the “You ruined Halo 3 by doing this, idiot!” folks.

When people pointed out that the mute button exists for this very purpose, he explained that the sheer amount of toxicity is too large. Any gender, age, or racial minority that had their identity outed in a match were ‘free pickings‘ for any gamer to flame, and muting could only do so much.

“So a bunch of females got a cool social feature cut? Idiots.”No… obviously… it was the dumbasses spewing slurs and threats. And it still is.

Griesemer’s thread was created in response to streamer Taylor Morgan’s post about her experience facing toxicity inValoranton X/Twitter. While his posts were made in support of Morgan, the replies under her tweets weren’t so empathetic.

Twitch Streamer Pleads With Valorant to Take Action Against Toxicity

Earlier this week, Morgan uploaded a disturbing clip of a male teammate inValorantthreatening to commit serious bodily autonomy harm. The content of the clip may be distressing, so proceed with caution.

I have never made a more desperate plea that what I am about to say right now.@riotgames@RiotSupportI need you guys to fucking do something. I am an incredibly strong person and I have been streaming for a very, very long time. But absolutely nothing prepares you for someone…pic.twitter.com/Gr77uBsBrT

Following the threats, she immediately closes out of the game and stops streaming, affected by the comments. Sharing the clip on X/Twitter, she taggedRiot Games‘ accounts and made an honest request for stricter action against people contributing to this toxicity.

While some replies agreed with her and offered words of comfort, others weren’t so nice.

Many berated her for leaving the match mid-game or attempted to paint her as sensitive for not simply brushing off violent threats.
