Before Matt Reeves went ahead with the production ofThe Penguin,he had a word with the people at HBO. Wanting to create a mini-series set around the cinematic world of Reeves’ Gotham, the director received one simple warning from HBO.
How The Reevesverse Came To Be
It wasn’t his first rodeo of course, but it was indeed a big project to take on for any director. While the production of Robert Pattinson’sThe Batmanwas underway, Reeves took the time to bring his vision to life.
Since the film was going to be a Warner Bros. Discovery venture, it was a new idea to approach HBO to helm the mini-series that takes place in Reevesverse. When he approached WBD with this idea, Matt Reeves revealed toThe Wrapthat it was their plan all along.

Look, I know these things are connected, but it’d be really exciting to do an HBO show where you can investigate these characters in a way that HBO would.
Reeves further explained,

And they were like, ‘We want to do exactly that.’ And suddenly there was this moment where things were going to change.
As the director recalls it, several different ideas were explored. Some of them were based in metaphorical places like the corrupt police system of Gotham, the treatments of Arkham Asylum, and more.

However, when they started these ideas and workings with HBO,Matt Reevesreceived a warning from the HBO CEO. The warning was quite simple and something that Reeves believed to be true.

Things were gaining momentum.The Batmanwas underway production while Reeves was simultaneously working to bring his universe to life. Hundreds of different ideas about different characters were pursued.
From an honest cop in the corrupt system of Gotham to a story based in Arkham Asylum, Reeves wanted to make it good. As per his conversation with The Wrap, he was working on these stories and ideas when HBO CEO Casey Bloys met with him. The director recalled that Bloys told him something about the way HBO works.

As we were doing it, there was a point where [HBO CEO] Casey Bloys said, ‘Look, I just want to make sure you aren’t saving the marquee characters for the theatrical experience. This is HBO.’ And I said, ‘Oh.’.
Reeves wanted to showcase Oswald Cobb’s rise to power followingthe power struggle that happened after Carmine Falcone’s death. WithThe Penguinconfirmed to be filmed, Reeves was exploring other stories that would point to a whole bigger cinematic universe.

The whole ordeal was well worth it sinceThe Penguinreceived a rating of 8.8/10 on IMDB and a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The next episode is slated for arelease date of 26 July 2025 and will be available to stream on Max in the U.S.
