Creature Commandosmight have been an odd place to start the DCU, but it seems to be working out pretty well for the new franchise. The animated series from James Gunn has come out swinging, wowing fans and critics alike, also revealing what fans can expect from the wider DC Universe starting withSupermanin 2025.
A particular manner in whichCreature Commandoshas set the tone for the DCU is by showing audiences how raunchy it is willing to get. Princess Ilana Rostovic and Rick Flag Sr. engaged in some TV-MA activities in the second episode of the show, and it seems that James Gunn had a lot of fun shooting it.
Frank Grillo and Maria Bakalova shot the s*x scene between their characters over Zoom
James Gunnrevealed in an interview how much fun he had recording the scene with Maria Bakalova andFrank Grillo, who, according to the director, had to record the scene over Zoom. Further, Gunn also revealed that he could not stop laughing, given that the actors had to record the scene by making out with their own hands. He said (via Variety):
It was hilarious. I was in one country, Frank was in a different country. And we just had to make sounds. Because both of these characters are very aggressive, it was long minutes of us kissing our hands, because you have to recreate the sound of kissing. And it’s like, ‘Oh, what am I even doing?’
However, as Gunn also explained, the point behind the scene was not all spectacle and shock and awe. The point of the scene, as Gunn revealed, is to make the characters feel human. Throughout the first episode, we see that the death of Rick Flag Jr. is weighing on Rick Flag Sr., who, while originally refusing Ilana’s advances, gives in after his fight with Dr. Phosphorous.

Be it Star-Lord, Peacemaker, or Rick Flag Sr., some of James Gunn’s most iconic characters in his modern filmography have been flawed human beings, who wear the guilt of their actions on their sleeves. Speaking about the s*x scene in relation to Rick and Illana, the director said:
They’re fucking in the bathroom. They’re two adults that are attracted to each other, and they’re both very good-looking people. Let’s just show ’em having s*x in the bathroom.
Creature Commandoshas set the DCU off to a great start, differentiating itself from the MCU in more ways than one. The DCU kicking things off with an animated series, something that DC is arguably better at than Marvel, could indicate that James Gunn might have been the right guy for the job, however, it remains to be seen how the public handlesSuperman, and how much the most recognizable superhero in pop culture history makes DC Studios.
