In an exclusive interview withRadioTimes, Sydney Freeland, the executive producer and director of Echo, revealed that the show will embrace a villainous storyline, marking Marvel’s first TV-MA series. “This will be Marvel’s first TV-MA series… We always knew that we wanted to tell a story that was a little more grounded, it was a little more street level, it was a little grittier.
In discussions with Marvel about the character, Sydney Freeland made it clear that the goal is explicitly not to transform Echo into a traditional Marvel hero like Captain America, as Freeland finds that concept uninteresting.
“In conversations with Marvel, as we were talking about the character, the response was, like, ‘Let’s lean into that, let’s see how far we can go down that rabbit hole.Really, as we come into the series, Maya Lopez is a villain. But the goal is not to turn her into Captain America. No, no, no. That, to me, is actually kind of boring.”
Freeland aims to explore the complexities and dynamics of her character, delving into the intriguing journey of a deaf indigenous girl rising to a top lieutenant in Kingpin’s army. Echo will avoid the conventional tropes of good vs evil when it comes to Captain America. We’ll have to wait and see how the show will turn out once it releases on January 9th.
