I’m unsure if Netflix is trying to drum up some competition between spy thriller shows. The Recruit’ssecond season is set to stream this week, while the puzzlingly uber-popularThe Night Agent’ssophomore effort premiered the week before. For my money, there is no competition.

Both shows are imperfect, butThe Recruithas far more fun with its genre premise thanThe Night Agent. Led by heartthrob Noah Centineo, the second season offers thrills and laughs while smartly dropping some of the dead weight of personal relationships.
I’ll offer another hot take on the subject —The Recruitis smarter than the latter.

Real Reason Why Lana Condor and Noah Centineo Never Dated in Real Life is Far From What The Actress Said
Netflix’sThe RecruitReview and Synopsis
The second season followsCentineo’sOwen Hendricks, who has just finished a crash course in being a new lawyer for the CIA. After losing his Russian asset, Max (Guardians of the Galaxy’sLaura Haddock), he is immediately hit with a bombshell: Karolina (Malignant’sMaddie Hasson), the ice-blond assassin chasing them worldwide, is Max’s daughter.
Owen makes it back to America but is grounded and ready to take the fall for the failures of the operation. However, after “accidentally” accepting “graymail” not addressed to him, he comes up with a plan. Hendricks asks his boss, Nyland (Die Hard 2: Die Harder’sVondie Curtis-Hall), if he takes on an impossible case of “Bill Bemus” and wins, he gets his old life back.

If not, the CIA can place yet another loss at his feet.

Netflix’sThe Recruitis Fun and Never Takes Itself Too Seriously
And this is whereThe Recruit’ssecond chapter is even better than its first. The plot includes a South Korean operation, which is so secret that only the person who knows about it passes away after retirement. The show then introduces a new character, played by Tee Yoo, who isso good inPast Livesand proves himself to be a venerable action star in the series.
While also creating some fun antagonist-buddy comedy chemistry between Centineo and Yoo, it adds a much-needed emotional depth to what could have been a one-note role. The character of Jang Kyu, cautious and thoughtful, is the perfect foil to Owen’s reckless and impulsive heroic nature. To avoid spoilers, the reason for the operation is a pretty standard thriller subplot.

However, what is happening around the story makes the Alex Hawley series an addictive shot of genre-popcorn streaming television.
Agatha All Along Season 1 Review — One of the Worst Marvel Television Series Ever!
Is Netflix’sThe RecruitWorth Watching?
This is usually when I sayThe Recruitis worth watching, so the review is optimized for SEO searches on Google. The series is worth watching because of its high-energy, almost punk-rock approach to spy thrillers. However, I would be remiss not to mention its faults. For instance, some action shootouts are like 80s television; you’ve never seen so many bullets fly and miss open targets. Also, Centenio has a limited range, though it is improving.
What should be embraced is the cynical way government employees are always looking to stab each other in the back and protect themselves. This adds a lot of unpredictability and dark humor to the series, which is smarter than most. Nathan Fillion is excellent here as a bureaucrat without a conscience. Colton Dunn, who I will never forget as a member ofDudez-A-Plenti, adds plenty of comic relief, and Kaylah Zander is a star in waiting.

Overall, this spy series is entertaining and rebellious, and you don’t have to take it too seriously, and you can still feel satisfied by it. Along with a deep bench of entertaining turns, the addition of Tee Yoo, and the charismatic Noah Centineo, the second season is even better than the first.
