New information about the next game in the long line of spin-offs toAtlus' mega-popular JRPGPersona 5indicates that it may not take place in the same universe as the one we’re used to seeing The Phantom Thieves galavanting about it. The information was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @chewingsoul, who regularly posts Persona-related content.

Citing a recent stream about the upcoming mobile gatcha game Persona 5: The Phantom X, they listed a translated quote from that stream as “‘P5X is not the same world as the original’ and ‘There are characters from the main family other than the phantom thief, but since the main character (point of view) is different, the relationship with them is also different’ is a combination of ‘parallel world’.” Adding their own analysis to that quote, the X user said “I think the meaning is roughly correct, but there is also the possibility that it is a dream punch line, someone’s cognitive world, or a game world.”

After Persona 5 Tactia, I Can’t Believe I’m Still Not Tired Of The Phantom Thieves

Who needs Persona 6 when it still feels this good to be a Phantom Thief?

That wouldn’t be entirely surprising, considering thevideo evidence gathered from the stream. A lot of new playable characters and their personas were revealed, and although the footage starts off very similar to Persona 5, with Joker standing on the chandeliers hanging above Sae Nijima’s cognitive casino, the scene is interrupted by static, and Joker is briefly replaced by a different character, codenamed WONDER.

Is The Parallel Universe A Credible Speculation?

Still, the idea that the game won’t be a direct sequel to Persona 5 or its expanded version,Persona 5 Royal, is catching on heavily, and it seems logical, given the gatcha-based nature of the game and its playable character list, which has been revealed to include heroes from all five mainline Persona games, with all appearing to be roughly the same age as in their first appearance, respectively.

Apost on the Persona 5 Redditwent so far as to state that, despite the possible mistranslation, the game being set in a universe parallel to that of Persona 5 is an official statement. As of the time of this writing, everyone responding to that post seems to be in agreement, or at the very least, open to the idea. Said one ruch respondent, “I mean, it’s set in 2023, so it’s a reasonable conclusion imo. At least until now.” Another questioned whether the parallel universe was foreshadowed by Lavena inPersona 5 Strikers, when she said that “other realms” were in danger.

As of now, it’s not clear if the mobile-only The Phantom X will even make it to western countries. Its third closed beta test just wrapped up on January 12, in China, and its uncertain if those of us in predominantly English-speaking countries will ever get a chance to play it. Still, the news that it’s likely not taking place as a direct sequel should provide some consolation to players who are trying to keep up on the lore of Persona 5 and the Persona series in general, as should therecent leak about another possible spin-offincorporating characters from all five mainline games, called Persona Grand Stage.
