Hunter x HunterDirector’s Warning Against Bad Animation

In October 2023, the director ofYoshihiro Togashi’sHunter x Hunteranime series, Hiroshi Koujina, addressed a panel at the Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association event, which was reported byFull Frontal. During the discussion, Koujina expressed his opinions about the growing production of anime series and the scarcity of animators to work on them.

Koujina pointed out that as the anime industry is growing on a massive scale, the need for animators is also equally increasing. There are onlyso many animators present, and those who are available have to take on far more projects than they can handle due to the initial lack of training and development. This leads to mediocre animation and ultimately disappoints fans.

Koujina also stated that taking on multiple projects at the same time may provide better monetary compensation and even the opportunity to do remote work, but it affects animation extensively as it pressures the animators. Also, remote work affects the feedback and communications between the team, which is also a contributing factor.
