Ever sinceOne Piecestarted, Eiichiro Oda has been quite vocal about the real-life inspirations he has used for the characters and events in the series. While a few of these inspirations are quite evident, there are some that fans won’t recognize. One of them is Gol D. Roger, the only pirate who was able to find the One Piece treasure and earned the title of Pirate King.

Gol D. Roger

Roger is the only reason why theOne Pieceseries has an enticing, adventurous journey to portray. During his execution, he announced that his treasure was up for grabs, igniting the fire of the great pirate era that shook the entire world. His declaration motivated a lot of strong characters to go after the One Piece treasure, which is a mystery in itself.

Fans won’t know this, but Gol D. Roger was actually inspired by a real-life French pirate by the name of Olivier Levasseur, who, just like Roger, ruled the seas. However, the similarity between them goes much deeper than their power and strength.

The Man Who Ignited The Fire of the Pirate Era

The entire narrative ofOne Pieceis based around a treasure that has the power to turn the world upside down. It is everything that theOne Pieceworld has to offer, and the only crew that was able to find it was the Roger Pirates, headed by Gol D. Roger. Roger is one of the most powerful characters and his bounty is the highest as of yet.

He took on the challenge to find One Piece just like many others, but the only difference was that he succeeded. In addition to discovering the treasure, he learned the true history of the world, which dates back 800 years. Thus, he became the biggest enemy of the World Government, which imposed their tyranny over many nations.

The World Government along with the Navy used their entire power to catch Roger, and when they finally did, they decided to publicly execute him. However, the Pirate Kingdidn’t even have a single moment of regret; instead, he announced that if anyone can find his treasure, he/she can keep it for themselves and be crowned as the new Pirate King. Thus, marking the beginning of the great pirate era.

The Real Life Inspiration Behind Gol D. Roger

WhileEiichiro Odahas never confirmed this, Roger’s character seems to be inspired by Olivier Levasseur, who possessed the treasure, which had an estimated value of $1 billion. Levasseur was one of the greatest pirates in the 1600s, and just like Roger, the entire pirate community respected him.

He used to operate near Madagascar and had a strong crew that got him through many major battles and wars. It was rumored that Levasseur used to distribute all of his loot, of which many contained gold, jewelry, and other possessions fairly to his entire crew. However, his ruthlessness was next level, as he also became the most wanted criminal.

But the main thing that links Roger’s character with Levassuer is the fact that, just like Roger, when Levassuer was publicly executed, he also announced that anyone who could find his treasure could keep it. Not only that, he also tossed a cryptogram in the crowd that pointed to the exact location of the treasure. However, no one has been able to find the treasure till now.
