While they remain on edge about teaming up with Raishan, Vox Machina agrees to pair up.

At the same time, Vex (Laura Bailey) and Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) begin a torrid affair. Vax (Liam O’Brien) struggles with visions while hoping to commit to a relationship with Keyleth (Marisha Ray). Unlike Vex and Percy, Vax, and Keyleth wish to keep it secret and hidden. Keyleth also feels unseen by her teammates when it comes time for decisions. Pike (Ashley Johnson) struggles with her faith. Even grander environments and showcases await fans.

The first two seasons ofThe Legend of Vox Machinaprovided incredible visual splendor. Those moments never relied exclusively on the visuals, but this season, it’s undeniably one of the best-looking action shows on television.Vox Machinalooks like a series that wants to reinvent fantasy shows. Its visual and tonal palette are in line withInvincible‘s style, butVox Machinaalso usesgiant CGI creatures that would stand on their own. Creating a visual difference between our heroes and their antagonists proves fruitful.

The action set pieces are simply astounding. Watching dragons battle in the air, characters run across bazaar rooftops, or guns fire as smoke monsters appear from the darkness showcase the impeccable taste. The world-building remains exquisite, and the scale has few peers in the TV world. Simply put, the artists and storytellers forThe Legend of Vox Machinaare only limited by what their imaginations can craft. Otherwise, they know how to execute the show with incredible precision.

Percy, Vex, Grog, Keyleth, Pike, and Vax hide in an alley during a mission in The Legend of Vox Machina.

Additionally, the writers continue getting dark with the humor. A literal trip to Hell makes for stunning setwork, and the humor succeeds on every level. The visual gags are next level. The one-liners, including vulgar phrases and profanity, are perfectly situated. There’s sexuality and love shown in brilliant detail, as well as a willingness to make lewd humor part of the show’s DNA.

Storytelling and relationships come first inThe Legend of Vox Machina.

Without an assurance that the character beats work, the gorgeous setpieces might feel meaningless. However, even when the images showcase massive fights, the best moments become the personal ones for the characters. Without these very real stakes,The Legend of Vox Machinamight eventually drift out of favor – like the late seriesArcherhad after so many meaningless events.

YetThe Legend of Vox Machinaforces its characters to live out profoundly personal and internal conundrums. What does it mean to love someone and be an integral part of a team? Can one’s faith coincide with the danger and violence you surround yourself with? How can one save the world if they cannot speak to their family? Will anyone ever be as funny as Grog?

These ideas come up and provide profound character moments. The introspection is key, and it works to keep the audience hooked. While some of these plotlines feel a little over-baked, it also allows a card game to become so significant that your heart will be in your throat watching it unfold. That’s the kind of storytelling that only works when your writers do the work, and they’ve done this forVox Machina.
