In avideofor Sony’s CES 2021 showcase, PlayStation’s Jim Ryan says the upcomingUnchartedmovie andThe Last of UsTV show are “just the beginning.““We’re also really thrilled to bring some of the best PlayStation IP to new media like film and television,” said Ryan. “You’ll see this year the upcoming Tom Holland filmUncharted, based on our iconic adventure games. AndThe Last of Us, a gritty, emotional journey, will be coming to HBO. This is just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences.“After years ofnumerous delays, a movie of adaptation ofUnchartedis releasing this year starring Tom Holland. The moviewrapped filmingin October 2020 and Mark Wahlberg teased his role as Sully. More recently, new images have been released showing off several artifacts.
As for HBO’sThe Last of Usseries, its development wasannounced in March 2020withChernobyl’s Craig Mazin set to write and produce the show. Mazin will be joined by Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann as a writer and producer. The show wasgreenlit last Novemberwith production starting soon.Chernobyl’s Johan Beck has said he’ll directat least one episodeof the series. Additionally,Last of Uscomposer Gustavo Santaolallawill return to composethe score.
In 2019, Sony Interactive Entertainment formedPlayStation Productions, a studio dedicated to adapting PlayStation titles to films and television shows. The studio will be run by Asad Qizilbash, SIE’s Vice President of marketing. As reported byVG247last December, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra said seven films and three shows based on PlayStation franchises are in development.
Unchartedreleases on August 13, 2025 in theaters. It stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and is directed byZombieland’s Ruben Fleischer. Currently, there’s no release date forThe Last of Uson HBO. Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin will be the showrunner for the series.
