Another day, another Hollywood attempt at turning a best-selling novel into the next blockbuster franchise. It’s been a long time coming, almost a decade, but fans of Robert Ludlum’sThe Janson Directive(You know, the guy behind Jason Bourne), have something to be cautiously hopeful about. While Dwayne Johnson and John Cena aren’t stepping into the frame together, their star power is driving the project forward.

The Rock is sticking to producing, while Cena is stepping into the lead role. So technically, yes, they’re“working together,”but no, they won’t be sharing any scenes or doing a tag team against the baddies. So, what’sThe Janson Directiveall about, and why is it such a big deal? Let’s break it down.

Paul Janson’s fight for survival

The Janson Directiveis about Paul Janson, a character who feels like a spiritual cousin to Ludlum’s most famous creation, Jason Bourne. Janson is an ex-Navy SEAL and a former member of Consular Operations, a covert U.S. government agency. He’s haunted by memories of war, particularly his time under the command of Alan Demarest—a sadistic psychopath who betrayed Janson during the Vietnam War. Janson’s testimony eventually led to Demarest’s execution, but the scars still shape his life.

Janson, meanwhile, has succeeded in reinventing himself as a corporate security consultant. He’s highly sought after and prefers to choose only the assignments that appeal to him. One such job comes his way through a mysterious woman, who asks him to rescue her boss, Peter Novak, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning billionaire and humanitarian, taken hostage by a militant group. If you’re a fan of the Jason Bourne series, you’ll find familiar territory. It is, perhaps, an attempt to rekindle the sameBourne formulafor this generation.

John Cena steps in as Dwayne Johnson bows out

Initially,Dwayne Johnsonwas set to star as Paul Janson, but scheduling conflicts forced him to take a step back from the lead role. With movies likeSkyscraperandJumanji: Welcome to the Jungledemanding more of his attention when the project was being greenlit, The Rock opted to stay onboard as an executive producer instead. Announcing the change on social media, Johnson assured fans that his passion for the project remained strong, even if he couldn’t headline it.

John Cenais no stranger to the silver screen, and recent successes in his role asPeacemakerproved he could balance the humor and intensity required for the role—a goodadjacent The Rockfit forThe Janson Directive.Cena’s casting has also sparked a lot of excitement.

While some fans were initially surprised by the swap, many are eager to see how Cena tackles a role that demands both physicality and emotional depth. This also is a passion project for Johnson, who, along with his Seven Bucks Productions team, is ensuring the movie stays true to Ludlum’s vision and can be an adaptation that ages well.

Building a cinematic universe and franchise reunions

The Janson Directiveis not the sole IP Universal Pictures is working on. It’s part of a larger strategy to adapt Robert Ludlum’s novels for the big screen (The Parsifal MosaicandThe Sigma Protocolare already in the works). With Ludlum’s catalog offering a laundry list of spy thrillers and conspiracies, the studio is aiming to create an interconnected universe, much like what Marvel has done with superheroes.

Screenwriter James Vanderbilt (White House Down) is adapting the novel, collaborating with Goldsman. The right director, who has yet to be announced, will be crucial in making it the kind of pulse-pounding action and smart storytelling that fans of the genre crave, especially with how saturated it has become now.

Fans have also been dreaming of seeing these two WWE legends throw down (or team up) on the big screen, and the idea isn’t that far-fetched. CouldThe Janson Directivebe the stepping stone to making it happen? It’s possible. Johnson has already shown he’s open to mending fences—returning to theFast & Furiousfranchise after a public feud with Vin Diesel. For Cena, a return to the franchise remains a possibility as well. He shed light on the rumors, saying

I would be in The Fast and the Furious as long as they would have me because it’s an action movie about cars. So that franchise I’m a fan of. To be invited in is awesome. But, uh, I did have a pretty big fiery wreck in the last one. I know that they have a reputation for resurrecting characters. I hope I made it. They didn’t have a funeral for me, so I’m okay. I’m okay. But I hope I made it. I hope I can do the next one.

The question isn’tifthey’ll share the screen—it’swhen.
