Art imitates life. After all, a range of movies and TV series are based on daily life, andThe Bearis the perfect illustration of this, as the story itself is about a chef. The point is that when it comes to an audiovisual production, details need to be changed not only to make sense of the plot, but also for drama and pacing, for example.

However, for some people who can relate, it is difficult not to compare whether what is seen on screen is in fact the picture of reality. That’s exactly what happened when a Michelin-Star chef was asked to evaluate scenes from the series. Perhaps there was a lack of research?
IsThe BearOld-Fashioned?
According to master chef Paul Liebrandt, the answer is yes. In a video for theInsider channel, he broke down some of the scenes featured in the show. According to him, much of what is shown in the first few episodes of the first season is based on a reality that no longer exists.
Liebrandt has been in the business for 25 years and owned Corton in New York City, which held two stars in the New York City Michelin Guide. According to him, the first idea of what this type of establishment may be today, is not the same as that portrayed inThe Bear.

Although an environment of great rigidity, demands, and pressure with respect to the relationships between the chef, sous chef, and assistants was once considered normal in the 1990s, Liebrandt says that from his experience, it’s best to leave criticism to one side.
In my experience, it’s better to say less. you may do a lot more with a look and a gesture than telling someone that they’re no good and they’re short.

Another detail mentioned was related to the ‘respect’ in the kitchen via the expression “yes, chef”, which, although exaggerated in the series to emphasize demand, can have multiple interpretations and layers. Also, the use of hands and the orderly placement of dishes on the counter show responsibility and understanding of the chef’s orders, according to Liebrandt.
What Does The Audience Have to Say About The Bear?
InThe Bear, the dynamic between the chef and his sous chef was declared overdone by Liebrandt. But it seems that this is not only the opinion of a professional, but of the viewers themselves, especially now after the premiere of thethird season.

The TV show even won some categories at the Emmy and Golden Globes, but according to comments on social media, the plot really doesn’t live up to reality, according to many fans.
Scenes of constant shouting and hustle and bustle in a kitchen are what have ended up displeasing many, some of whom have even experienced working in a large restaurant in real life.

The truth is that this is a scenario that has become more of a classic stereotype, than a reflection of reality.
The Bearis streaming on Hulu.
