Black Clovermight be targeted by fans for some lousily animated scenes, but that cannot define the entire anime. It has some highly rated episodes that can go head-to-head with some of the finest action sequences in the industry. Studio Pierrot also hires freelancers to animate scenes, one of whom is Beast.
Beast is a freelance animator who worked on episode 166 of theBlack Cloveranime. In an interview, he described his animation process as well as the extremely tight deadline that he had to work with.

Inan interview, Beast talked about his participation in the production of Black Clover. The animator’s first gig was in episode 145 ofBlack Cloveraround a year before he was contacted again for episode 166. He had initially thought he had screwed the job, but when Pierrot contacted him again, he was happy to not be ditched by the studio.
It was cool but very intense. The deadlines for this episode were crazy, and I’m very impressed at what they managed to pull off in such a short amount of time.
In fact, when Beast talked to other animators on the project, they all seemed taken aback about the date the episode was supposed to be aired. Everyone collectively called it insane, but they pulled it off marvelously. In fact, episode 166 of Black Clover currently has an 8.14 score on My Anime List and a 9.6 rating on IMDB. It is one of the highest-rated episodes of the entire anime.

The episode contained two intense battles. The first half focuses on Vanica (Megicula) Vs. Loropechka, Noelle, and Nero, while the second half shows the legendary battle between Yami and Dante. The intense action scenes and the emotions of the heroes effectively moved the audience.

Once Studio Pierrot had sent the storyboards to the animators, Beast had to rush to choose the parts he liked. He ended up getting a scene from the second half of the episode in which Yami used his Dimensional Slash against Dante. The episode had some pretty intense scenes that made Beast question himself.
So I had challenges, like how to move the hair independently if the head was already moving, should it be a separate layer? Or should the mouth be in a separate layer instead? Should I just tell them to slide the hand up and down or should I draw every single frame separately so it doesn’t look cheap?
All of this was happening inside the animator’s brain while also making sure thatnothing became over the top. As he felt the intensity of the cut, he wanted fans tofeel Yami’s struggle, too. He referenced the Dimensional Slash from the previous episodes and added photo negative effects to it.
After the cut was mailed to the producer, she wrote back to express how impressed they were with it. In fact, the episode’s director had praised it too. His favourite from the entire scene was a minuscule 1-and-a-half-second cut in which Yami bounces off the ground to fly and make the Dimensional Slash.
