The project had a promising concept and could’ve transformed the sci-fi television landscape, but the odds were stacked against it. So, here’s a deep dive into one of Kripke’s shows that failed, which he still finds to be an upsetting professional endeavor.

The Show That Almost Killed Eric Kripke

Revolutionfirst premiered in 2012 and brought post-apocalyptic lore to our screens, where electricity mysteriously ceases to work. The show followed a group of survivors in this new world, and this intriguing premise was supported by the star power of Billy Burke.

Eric Kripkewas the perfect creator for the show, as he already had experience withSupernatural, so it was expected that he could drive another high-stakes and action-packed series. He said,“Man, that show almost killed me.”His statement reflects strong emotions, which he felt during the production itself, as the whole ordeal was a constant battle, in both a creative and logistic sense. Why Did Eric Kripke’sRevolutionFailed?

The show’s premise happens to be undeniably intriguing, however, there were several issues that led to its downfall. One of the main reasons and perhaps the sad one is that it was simply too ahead of its time. Moreover, a post-apocalyptic world with no electricity presented many technical challenges for the narrative.

There was no consistency in the world-building or the storytelling, which was bogged down by too many changing sets and characters. The stress of filming at multiple locations was too much, further making it a challenging project. The series had a loyal fanbase, but it wasn’t enough to revive it for another season.

The show’s cancellation after only two seasons came as a blow but also a lesson for Kripke. However, the experience he gathered on the sets ofRevolutionwas exhausting but valuable, and likely offered valuable insights into the importance of structuring a TV show.
