One Piecehas a plethora of villains to offer, but only a few of them are as memorable as Kaido. Eiichiro Oda not only created a merciless and aggressive antagonist but also someone who was the complete opposite of what Luffy stood for. He has been one of the biggest challenges faced by the protagonist, and for good reason.

It was in his battle against Kaido that Luffy achieved his fifth gear, a legendary moment for allOne Piecefans. And if any villain deserved to be the trigger for Luffy’s real powers, it is Kaido.

Eiichiro Oda contrasted Kaido against Luffy’s idea of freedom inOne Piece

Kaido was once a young warrior who was handed over to the World Government. The young man realized the darkness residing within the organization pretty soon and escaped, later wanting to combat them. Till here, his story sounds like someone who Luffy would sympathize with, but once Kaido gained power, everything changed.

One Piece Theory Reveals Eiichiro Oda Lied to You: Kaido Is Alive

Kaido wanted to defeat the Celestial Dragons, but his method was different from that of Luffy’s. He believed in the survival of the fittest and that the answer was strength and power. His idea of freedom and equality was to drag the nobles from their pampered states to the reality of battlefields. He considered that only war can decide a man’s true worth.

But once he set up his base in Wano, he used the weak in every way possible to combat the strong. His philosophy of survival of the fittest ruined the country. In his search for freedom and equality, he took away those very things from the people he ruled over, something that Luffy stands against with every fiber of his being.

Kaido’s misplaced idea of freedom makes him the perfectOne Piecevillain

Kaido wants to be free, but his idea of freedom is far removed from that of Luffy. In fact, his idea of freedom can be translated to ultimate power for himself. Luffy’s idea of freedom, on the other hand, isn’t just about escaping oppression; it is the freedom to chase after dreams while staying under moral boundaries.

While Kaido wants to be free like Roger and Joyboy, he does not realize that an extravagant death is not what makes someone a legend. Only those who live a great life, struggling each and every day against oppressive forces, are considered legends. Unlike Kaido, who craves a grand battle before death, Luffy refuses to give in no matter how great his upcoming battle will be.

At the end of the day,Eiichiro Odamade Kaido the perfect thematic villain for Luffy.
