The tale of Naruto Uzumaki that has inspired many fans and other creators started with his dream of becoming a Hokage. The child who bears the hatred of his entire village is determined to earn their respect, and although it took him a lot of time, he ultimately managed to accomplish his dream. While he managed to keep the promise he made to himself, he broke the one that he made to Nagato.

The Pain’s Assault arc is one of the most important arcs in the entire series. Not only does it portray the brilliance of Masashi Kishimoto, but it also forces Naruto to question his own mindset. All of this happened because of the main antagonist of the arc, Pain. Pain, or Nagato, was the product of war and wanted to bring peace in the most cynical way possible.
However, Naruto managed to stop him and promised him that he would achieve true peace without violence when he fulfilled his dream of becoming the Hokage. Nagato trusted him and left it all in his hands. But in the sequel spin-off of the series,Boruto, it was pointed out that Naruto failed in his endeavors.

Naruto’s Promise To Nagato
Nagato’s terrifying childhood because of the war in his village, Amegakure, had a lasting impact on him. He wanted peace so badly that he decided to force peace on the world using any means necessary. Thus, he used the Akatsuki organization to imbue fear in the minds of other villages by using the power of the tailed beasts against them.
When he reached Konoha and almost completely destroyed it, he met another student of his former mentor, Jiraiya. Naruto was unaware of Nagato’s struggles as a child, and when he finally learned about it, he understood Nagato’s actions. But he never agreed to the ways Nagato used to bring peace to the world.

Thus he promised him that he would make sure that he brought peace to the entire world without using violence. This also included Nagato’s home village, Amegakure, which was in the worst condition possible. But with theimpending Shinobi World War, Naruto forgot about his promise and moved forward in life.
Amegakure’s Conditions Became Even Worse inBoruto
Naruto’s negligence towards his promise to Nagato became a big problem for him later on in life. Although Naruto did help in improving the peace conditions in a lot of places, he forgot to add Amegakure to his list. Thus, it got even worse to the point that it became a secret research facility for Kara, the secret society that caused havoc inBoruto.
Ever sinceNarutostarted, Amegakure has never had the chance to see peace and prosperity. First, it was used as a battleground during the various Ninja wars by Hanzo.

After him, the Akatsuki took over, and they used it as their base of operations. Thus, when Jiraiya entered the village and fought Nagato, he destroyed half of the village.
After Naruto became the seventh Hokage, fans were led to believe that hemanaged to bring peaceto all the villages and nations, even Amegakure. But the cycle continued and it was revealed inBorutothat Amegakure’s conditions have become even worse than they already were. Thus, Naruto not only failed his promise to Nagato, but he also failed his role as a Hokage.

NarutoandBorutoare available to watch on Hulu.
