The hit family comedy anime,Spy x Family, captured our hearts with its unique take on the found family trope. Nobody can resist a good political commentary interwoven with a wholesome budding dynamic between three unlikely people.

Loid Forger goes undercover to investigate Ostania’s political scene and needs to gain intelligence through a high-ranking official. He creates a fake family but unbeknownst to him, the girl he adopts, Anya, is telepathic while his pretend-wife, Yor, is a ruthless assassin.
It’s a hilarious dynamic between the three as they navigate looking like a normal family. Through this journey, they begin to genuinely care for each other. Loid and Yor are the exact type of parents Anya needs.

Tatsuya Endo, the mangaka ofSpy x Family, created the manga as a war-themed and military series, surrounding the motif of “lies.” He naturally ended up with a spy story but with the unique twist of having a fake family, breaking away from the typical “ruthless” spy character cliche.
Tatsuya Endo confesses he’s not a fan of the very genre he accidentally wrote about
The story revolves around Twilight, whom we know as Loid Forger, going undercover and trying to prevent a literal war from breaking out. He believes Donovan Desmond is plotting it and so creates a fake family to gather intelligence. Ever the composed spy, we begin tosee cracks in his facade.
Despite the looming threat of war, Loid now has people to care for and worry about. He nearly risks his mission after Murdock Swan insults Anya and Yor, punching the table instead. The assassin, likewise, was about to strike him as well.

Knowing how ruthless the fake couple can be,Tatsuya Endosubverted our expectations with this.Spy x Familybecame more family-oriented rather than solely on the spy story and the theme of war. This is perfectly explained by the fact that Endo hasn’t watched many spy movies at all.
Tatsuya Endo’s Detachment From His Characters Saved ‘Spy x Family’ From Potential Ruin
During theSPY X FAMILY x VIVIANTInterview with Katsumaru Enkaku, Tatsuya Endo confesses:
I didn’t have any particular desire to write a spy story. I’ve always liked military-like things and have been interested in war-related things, and when I combined that with the theme of “lies,” it naturally became a spy story. However, I haven’t seen many spy movies, and I’ve only seen one or two of the 007 movies.

It’s no wonderLoid isn’t the typical spyyou would find in a spy movie nor is Yor the cold, calculated assassin. His missions rarely involve true espionage and more heartwarming moments with his family, a surprising shift from the spy genre we were promised.
WhySpy x Familyworks so well
If Endo had concentrated more on the political themes ofSpy x Family, the series wouldn’t have been as successful. The blend of comedy, action, and heartfelt interactions givesSpy x Familya chance to invite a larger audience to engage with the story.
With the initial release of theSpy x Familyanime adaptation, viewers might have expected more espionage activities but were pleasantly met with cute moments. Anya has become a beloved and easily recognizable character in the anime community.

“I had to compromise on so many things”: Spy x Family’s Constant Changes Forced Tatsuya Endo to Take a Drastic Step
In the end, the series surpasses our expectations at every turn. Nobody watches the show expecting Loid to be the anime James Bond or Yor to be the anime Black Widow. They tune in for the family fun and to see their dynamic develop.
Spy x Familyis available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
