Directed by Gareth Edwards, the series follows a group of Rebel spies trying to steal the plans for the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction – the Death Star. However, some fans believe the film features one giant plot hole.

On Reddit, a fan questioned Grand Moff Tarkin’s actions during the film’s climax, seeing the Rebels securing the plans for the Death Star. The user argued why Tarkin needed to go to such extreme lengths to take out the Rebels. Here is what fans had to say about the supposed plot hole inRogue Oneon social media.
Star WarsFan Questions Tarkin Destroying Scarif inRogue One
Rogue One: A Star Wars Storywas released in 2016 to critical acclaim and grossed over a billion dollars at the box office. TheGareth Edwardsdirectorial is widely regarded as the best film in the franchise since the original trilogy, carving a special place for itself among the fanbase.
Given how closely the film is tied to the events of George Lucas’ 1977 original film, it had to be careful with its plot points so as not to contradict what fans already knew about the Death Star plans. As a result, the Rebel spies who stole the Death Star plans were killed on Scarif.

OnReddit, one user took an issue with Grand Moff Tarkin destroying the data vault on Scarif, located inside the Imperial security complex. The user argued that since there were only a handful of Rebels, Tarkin did not need to go to extreme lengths to destroy the data vault.
The archive must have been a major asset of the Empire, or it wouldn’t have been so heavily guarded. It looks to me as if Tarkin did the Rebel’s work for them.

The user made the above statement, explaining their issue with Tarkin wiping off the Empire’s archives.

During the film’s climax, Vader sends the Empire’s ships after the Rebel ships, where the Rogue One spies had relayed the Death Star plans. As a result, the focus should’ve been on retrieving the plans instead of destroying the archives, which only meant one less problem for the Rebels to deal with.
Star WarsFans Explain Tarkin’s Decision to Blow Up the Archives in Rogue One
Following the original post, several fans came forward to discuss the supposed plot hole. Several users shared their take on whyGrand Moff Tarkinchose to blow up the archives on Scarif despite the data stored there being a valuable asset for the Empire.
Here is whatStar Warsfans had to say about the Scarif plot hole on Reddit.

As the fan comments suggest, while in theory the idea of Tarkin destroying an important asset to the Empire sounds bad, it also demonstrates his confidence in the superweapon with which he kills the Rebel spies on Scarif. While Tarkin ended up destroying the archives in the process, the Empire likely had backups stored elsewhere.

At the same time, the Death Star’s plans were already compromised. Therefore, Tarkin likely prioritized killing the Rebels while preventing them from accessing other sensitive information from the archives. Ultimately, Tarkin most likely just wanted to show off his new weapon, which makes perfect sense for the egoistic character.
