Scream Phase 1: A Lovers' Spat

The first stage of this fight is where Scream will reveal most of her moves. She’s most dangerous up close, but she does have a ranged attack to keep you from feeling completely safe at a distance. Scream uses her hair for most of her attacks, which can sometimes make them a little difficult to track. Unlike traditional combat,Scream’s hair is like trying to predict the motion of a whip, and it’s often just as fast.In addition to being a fierce battle, it’s one dripping with emotion. The symbiote is feeding on Mary Jane’s negative emotions and slinging all kind of hard truths at Peter. While Mary Jane would never communicate with Peter in this way, much of what’s said is rooted in her true feelings.

Use The Environment

Throughout each stage of the fight, you’re going to see cars and other items marked with the L1+R1 command. These are devices you can rely on to release a sonic sound that will stop Scream in her tracks. These are, however, a finite resource. Once they’re all used up, you’re going to have to figure out a different approach to fighting off Scream. You’ll want to use these strategically during moments where you need an opening to attack or to put some distance between you and Scream.

Dodge Ranged Attacks

Inevitably, you’ll likely want to retreat to a safe distance from Scream to recoup. Don’t gain a false sense of security.Scream will throw a ball of symbiote (or possibly poison) at you as an attack. You’ll need to dodge this. She will even use this attack if you’re trying to close the gap, so be prepared to dodge in the air as well. Later in the fight, Scream will jump from rooftop to rooftop, hurling attacks at you the entire time. Fortunately, if you get hit by one of these, it isn’t going to hurt too much.

Symbiote Explosion

Scream will occasionally use an attack where tendrils burst from her body in all directions. You may recognize this attack, as Peter used it several times during his own time with the symbiote suit. You’ll notice that this attack is telegraphed with a blue ring. A blue ring means that this attack can only be dodged. If you try to parry the attack, you’re going to get hit pretty hard. So, if you see that blue ring, be sure to get out of the way before resuming your attack.

In true symbiote fashion, Scream’s entire body can be used as a weapon. This is especially true of her long, slimy hard. She will whip her hair at you with an attack that is telegraphed by a red ring. This signifies that the attack can be dodged or parried.I’ve always found the parry to be the better option. If you parry, you’ll create an opening for you to attack. This can be invaluable in challenging boss fights like this one.

Scream Phase 2: Hair With Attitude

At this point in the fight, you may be running a little low on environmental ways to trigger sonic sounds.Luckily, you can rely on your gadgets to create great opportunities to stop Scream from attacking for a moment.Use your sonic gadget to really make Scream squirm while you work in a few hits or use the moment to heal. Unlike the sonic assets in the environment, your gadgets will recharge. However, you still want to use these as strategically as possible. While they do recharge, they don’t do so quickly. You don’t want to reach for a gadget that isn’t there when you really need it.

Symbiote Leap

Scream will occasionally leap at you in an attempt to switch things up. This attack is telegraphed with a yellow ring. So, you absolutely have to parry it. Dodging isn’t an option here. You can, potentially, interrupt the attack with one of your own special abilities. You can see that in the video above. Unfortunately, it’s not the most reliable tactic and is more likely to happen by accident than on purpose.

Hair Swipe

Scream will sometimes whip her hair back and then swipe it across you in a circular motion. This attack is accompanied by a red ring. That means you have a couple of options. you’re able to, of course, parry the attack. As always, that’s likely your best course of action if you’re looking to create an opening. You can also dodge the attack. With how wide of a sweep Scream makes, it can be a little difficult to dodge. If you’re in a tight space or backed into a corner, you could have a really hard time getting away from the attack. All the more reason to parry when you can.

Scream Phase 3: A Change Of Location

In this phase, you’re going to change locations. The good news is that you’re going to have a whole new set of environmental tools to stop Scream in her tracks. The bad news is that you’re in a tighter space with more elevated terrain for Scream to use. This means she can regularly move to the high ground and strike down at you while you have limited space to move. It’s a dangerous place for you to be in, so you want to be sure that you’re following the advice above with regard to dodging and parrying her special attacks.

This attack doesn’t have a particular ring to it, so you can choose to block, parry, or dodge it. While it may not be as dangerous as Scream’s special abilities, it can be an opener to a chain of very powerful attacks. You want to avoid it if you can. However, if you can’t, you won’t suffer too much damage from the misstep.

It’s the bread and butter of superhero combat. Here’s how to dodge and parry successfully in Spider-Man 2.

Scream Phase 4: You Don’t Want To Do This

This stage of the fight is where you get to put an end to Scream and her hold on Mary Jane. The genius of this fight is that it’s more of an emotional victory for Peter than a physical one. It follows the main theme of the game, which is that a person must reject the symbiote themselves. Nobody can do it for them. It’s a great theme that resonates with the idea of responsibility and making the right choice. It also leaves the agency of the victory with the person who is being taken over instead of the person trying to help.

This is another blue ringed attack, meaning you absolutely have to dodge it.New to stage 4 of the fight, this is a dangerous attack. If you’re not careful, the beginning of the attack can look like the hair slam, which is less damaging and less dangerous all around. Watch for the blue ring, and be extra careful. Scream could still use her other symbiote attack where tendrils explode from everywhere, which also has a blue ring.
