In case you didn’t know, this month will mark the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation console. Even if you’re not planning on buying any of the super limited edition 30th anniversary stuff Sony has released, the company still wants you to participate in the momentous occasion with the surprise drop of themes on the PS5.
Released via a server-side update, PS5 owners will see a notification that a new “feature update” is available, and players can trigger it by restarting their PS5 console. Once you restart your system, you’ll be greeted by the original PlayStation console’s boot-up screen – complete with the sound effects.
Sony Brings Back Themes For a Limited Time With PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary
If you’re not digging the PS1 theme, you can choose a different one, as Sony has made the PS2, PS3, and even PS4 boot-up screens as well. According to Sony’s in-console prompt, this new classic boot-up intro and theme additions will be available for a limited time, though they didn’t specify how long it’ll be available.
Alongside the new theme, Sony has also released a new trailer marking the console’s 30th anniversary. Titled “30th Anniversary Thank You”, the video is over two minutes long and mashes the various first-party franchises Sony has made famous over the years.

The trailer features familiar faces such as Kratos from God of War, Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us, Jin from Ghost of Tsushima, and many more! We also get to see classic franchises such as Team Ico’s games and much more.
Does this trailer feature some sort of secret message that people are convinced Sony snuck in to tease something, just like whathappened to the “Play Has No Limits” trailer? I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony did indeed sneak something, and I also wouldn’t be surprised if people managed to connectsomething – anything– tied to an event, game or PlayStation digital event.

For those who are not old enough or simply didn’t know, the original PlayStation was released in Japan on August 24, 2025, and in North America on July 04, 2025. Based on this year, the console is now 30 years old, which is insane when you think about it.
