Simu Liu appeared as Marvel’s superhero Shang-Chi in 2021’sShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from the screenplay he wrote alongside Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, the movie is known to be the twenty-fifth movie in the MCU.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsis the first Marvel movie directed by an Asian director and has a predominantly Asian cast. The movie upon its release received a positive response with special mention of exploration and representation of Asian culture. Fans have been waiting for the sequel and now Simu Liu has shared an update.

Ardent Marvel fans have been waiting for the sequel ofShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsstarringSimu Liuas the titular character. It was announced in December of 2021 (viaDeadline) that director Destin Daniel Cretton will return to direct and write the sequel with the actor reprising his role and navigating through how he fits in the MCU.
The actor on hissocial mediawhile interacting with fans answered one of the questions that has given fans hope for the sequel. The fan asked‘So Shang-Chi 2 coming out or nah?’, to which he replied,

According to reports byCBR, trusted insider Daniel Richtman had shared on his social media that the sequel movie is likely to start filming in 2025 and is reportedly going to feature time travel and Iron Fist. He also clarified that Iron Fist who is going to debut in the upcomingEyes of Wakandaanimated series is the one going to appear inShang-Chi 2.
The moviegoers and Marvel comic book fans are excited to see what the sequel movie holds for the character. In July 2023 (viaTHR), Simu Liu had addressed the delayed filming for the movie noting that he was told that the sequel would followAvengers: The Kang Dynasty, but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond his control. The actor also added that he hoped he’d have more concrete news to share.

In a conversation withComicBook.comon the red carpet ofArthur the King’s premiere, the actor was asked if his fan-favorite character Shang-Chi is going to appear inAvengers: The Kang Dynastyto which he said,
“I don’t know to be honest. I mean, those things are so above my pay grade. I just wanna continue to be a fan of it. You know, when I get a call of like, ‘Hey, this is what you’re in and this is where you’re going to show up. And, this is when you’re going to be need to be blacked out for.’ That’s kind of generally what tends to happen.”

Liu further complimented the writer-director by stating that he is such a special filmmaker and they’re very happy to have him back for the sequel adding that he’ll be working on that and they’re very excited to see what he comes up with. Liu is confident that it’s going to be brilliant.

Marvel Studios has been going through a bit of restructuring at the moment but the audience is excited to see what lies ahead. Back in 2021, Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige mentioned toComicBook.comthat the early reactions toShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsgave him and the studio hope that the audience wanted to see more of these characters.
He added at the time that they had certain ideas on how where to take these characters and where to put them. But for now, things have been kept under wraps.
