Guillermo del Toro’s romantic fantasy filmThe Shape of Waterremains one of his most notable original concepts. While some fans consider this their most favorite film from the director, others had a difficult time making sense of it all.

This is understandable, though, since del Toro likes to write stories poetically—he provides clues all across the movie that the audience could pick up along the way. Apart from the fairytale-like storyline, there’s also a mystery that unravels at the end of the film, and it’s up to the viewers to form their own conclusions.
Why Elisa immediately fell in love with the creature inThe Shape of Water
The Shape of Waterfollows the story of a mute woman and a mysterious, scaled creature who lives in a water tank. As they developed a unique and unlikely bond,Sally Hawkins’ Elisa Esposito discovers the harsh fate that awaits the Amphibian Man, and so she helps him escape death. The final confrontation led to Elisa dying after getting shot, but not long after the creature took her body to the water, subsequently reviving her.

The two-hour film might have been too short for some viewers, but it was enough to tell the story in full. In fact,Guillermo del Toroshowed all the answers to our questions just as we were watching the movie. Some fans surprisingly found Elisa and the creature’s bond a bit rushed, and it felt as if they needed more time to show how they developed feelings for each other.
A fan onRedditshared a theory that almost sounds like the answer we’re all looking for. Elisa and the Amphibian Man had an instant romantic connection because of their possible shared genetics.

I got the impression that she was half fish-man herself. Clues were left—she was found in a river, she’s never been able to speak, she m*****bates underwater every morning, and most importantly he healed her “scars” into working gills. He was never shown to have transformative powers, only healing powers, implying that she had partially-formed gills from being, perhaps, a half-breed.
The pacing might have been too swift for some, and the story where they formed a connection seemed to be missing—but it’s actually not! The clues were sprinkled all over the film.

Elisa’s physical disability was a clue to her origin
Apart from the creature, the most interesting character in the film is Elisa. She had a very intriguing background and her situation initially proved to be unfavorable for her. The audience originally believed that she was mute because someone slashed her throat when she was a baby—but what we thought was a tragedy for her was actually a gift that would allow her to live underwater.

All along, Elisa had the potential to be a part of another world which she was actually made for, and she only discovered this by opening her heart and mind to something that was not from the human world.
