Simu Liu’sShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsfollowed the usual MCU pattern of not sticking to its source material entirely. The film had a lot of elements that came out of the writer’s vision and one such thing that fans absolutely loved was the character of Katy Chen. Fans will not find Awkwafina’s friend character to Shang-Chi, although they might find another Katy.
Katy Chen, in the film, caught the audience’s attention with her charm and comic timing. Fans found it refreshing to see a female character playing the main comic relief in the MCU. They also loved the friendship between Shang-Chi and Katy.

Fans loved the friendship between the characters ofSimu LiuandAwkwafinainShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Katy Chen’s family of Chinese immigrants moved to San Francisco when she was a child. Chen meets Shaun in high school and protects him from a bully by singing Eagles’Hotel California.

Shaun and Katy become best friends, although she is unaware of his father and his days of training to be an assassin. When Katy eventually learns about Shaun or Shang-Chi, she accompanies him back to Macau, China. She eventually learns archery skills when she arrives in the alternate dimension of Ta Lo. She plays a key role in taking down the Dweller-in-Darkness in the climax of the movie, by shooting a perfect hit with her arrow.
Interestingly, you cannot find this character anywhere in the comics. The Marvel Comics do have another Katy character, Katy Bashir. This character is engineered as a superhuman baby and can turn into her brother Tim Bashir. The duo are collectively known as the Apex in the Marvel Universe. Katy Chen only shares a name with this character.
Marvel fans also had one major issue withKaty’s character in the film. Katy’s archery shot in the final moments of the film would almost put Hawkeye out of his job. Fans found it to be a logical mistake since a common woman like Katy wouldn’t have been able to nail that shot with very minimal practice time (via ScreenRant).
However, many defended Katy’s shot using the comics where Shang-Chi’s mother explains the skills of the people of Ta Lo. The comics explained:
They armed us with two skills. The first is our ability to psionically link with the Qilin, a magnificent species native to Ta Lo. The second is our aptitude for archery.
It was possible that Katy was influenced by the magic of Ta Lo, as per comics. It is also ironic how the comic was able to explain the power of a character, who never even appeared in it.
The Future Of Awkwafina’s Katy In The MCU
For a long time, fans were unsure whetherShang-Chiwould return for a second part. Fans were confused at the updates coming from various corners. In April,Simu Liu confirmed that a sequelwas in development (via IGN). It was speculated that the filming would begin in March 2025. However, a lack of announcement of the film at the San Diego Comic-Con still worries fans.

If the film were to return, Awkwafina would have a major role in the film with her newly acquired archery aptitude. The first film proved that Katy and Shaun are an inseparable team. In the film’s climax, Wong takes them both to meet Carol Danvers and Bruce Banner, hinting that she is as important as Shang-Chi. Awkwafina also wants the same for her character, as she revealed in an interview withDigital Spy:
I will say that I would like to see her not without Shang-Chi. I think that their friendship is really important for each of them individually.
Her quick thinking, sharp driving skills, and impeccable comic timing are sure to make her an iconic character in the MCU.Shang-Chiis now available for streaming on Disney+.
