Rangiku Matsumoto is often seen asBleach’s set and defined fanservice character. She is often seen in the background as a spectator, but mostly in non-combat moments when there is a need for comic relief.

She is a playful, flirtatious lieutenant who enjoys teasing her fellow Soul Reapers and seems to always be indulging in alcohol. But beneath that carefree and confident exterior lies one of the series’ most tragic and overlooked backstories.
Rangiku had her soul stolen from her by Aizen, along with a part of the Soul King’s power. After this loss, Rangiku changes completely and alters her personality and demeanor to cope with the massive setback.

Rangiku’s fanservice is more than just comedy
Rangiku was a lieutenant in the 10th Division and had a terrifying zanpakuto. She can kill without the enemy even sensing something is wrong with them.
But she never received a Bankai, so she was seen away from the front lines and became a fanservice character entirely, often showing off her curvature and teasing the guys (and girls) in the Soul Society.

A lot of character development occurred for her inBleach’s Turn Back the Pendulum arc. It was revealed that Rangiku had a significant portion of her soul stolen by Sosuke Aizen’s subordinates, which left her incomplete, dampeningnot just her spirits but also her power and potential.
“She’s heavily nerfed in a way that can’t be overcome”: Never Forget Tite Kubo Made Rangiku Weaker Than She Deserved to in Bleach
After all, it was seen since the very beginning that the soul itself is the basis of power for Soul Reapers. Though the exact extent of this loss is never fully explored in the anime, it undoubtedly left a lasting impact on her.
Rangiku is not your usual Shonen character
It is possible that Rangiku’s overt confidence in her body and the way she openly and boldly displays herself might be due to this. Her confident and immodest behavior might often mistaken for mere fanservice, but it could actually be a way of her coping with her incompleteness.
She could be showing that she still owns herself, even though a part of her literal soul was snatched away by another. Rangiku’s flirtatious behavior might seem like a simple personality trait, butthere’s been a lot of change since her soul was stolen away.

That may be the reason that she is always seen drinking, to cope and stay her confident, carefree self. This is all just to mask her true feelings and the incredible amount of pain and sadness that lies within her.
After experiencing something as traumatic as losing a piece of her soul, Rangiku’s comfort in her own skin and bodycould be seen as a way of fighting back, of getting back control of herself.

“There’s a reason for this fanservice”: Tite Kubo Is a Genius for the Best Rangiku Scene in ‘Bleach’ That Many Fans Claim Could’ve Been Done Better
Rangiku’s character is extremely tragic and deals with many themes that just do not fit in with a Shonen anime. WhileBleachis categorized as a Shonen anime, Rangiku’s tale reminds us of a psychological or Seinen genre anime, with loss, trauma, and coping mechanisms being explored.
TheBleachanime series is available to watch onCrunchyroll.
