The once-Xbox-exclusiveSea of Thievesis set to come toPlayStation 5consoles later this month. April 30th, to be exact. But its closed beta on PlayStation 5 is already showing just how popular the title is likely to be when its full launch rolls around in a little over two weeks time.

Earlier this year, developer Rareconfirmed everybody’s suspicionsto be true. Sea of Thieves is, in fact, coming to PlayStation 5.In a blog postconfirming the news, Rare said that Sea of Thieves' PlayStation 5 launch was “part of a broader Xbox initiative.” The developer was, of course, referencing Xbox’s announcement that it would be bringing four previously Xbox-exclusive games to other consoles.

Trying to manage a spaceship alongside friends is great, but it’d be great to have some real enemies in there too.

Phil Spencerreiterated during the Xbox Business podcastthat this decision was “not a change to [Xbox’s] fundamental exclusive strategy” and was made with Xbox’s long-term health in mind. As for the four games, they werelater confirmed to beGrounded, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves.

Sea of Thieves will be the final release of the four games, with the previous three titles available to buy on PlayStation 5 right now.

The Sea of Thieves closed beta kicked off yesterday morning and is available exclusively to those who have pre-ordered any of the game’s three editions. Players can set sail between April 12th and April 15th before the game’s official launch on April 30th. Any progress you make during the beta will also be carried over to launch.

Considering Sea of Thieves is one of Xbox’s most popular live-service titles, it should come as no surprise that fans were absolutely stoked to see it come to PlayStation 5. But apparently even Rare wasn’t prepared for just how many people would be jumping into the closed beta this weekend.

In just a little over an hour after its release, the official Sea of Thieves X (formerly Twitter) account said that the beta was “experiencing a high volume of new players” which resulted in longer wait times for players.

The team at Rare continued to investigate the issue, but said that the long wait times will likely continue to affect players throughout the weekend.According to a blog poston the matter, Rare said that players will be affected in one of two ways. The first issue may see players join a game in a region that isn’t optimal to their location, resulting in lag, higher network latency, and rubberbanding.

The second issue will see players experience longer wait times to join servers, especially in more populated regions. Unfortunately, Rare says it will be unable to resolve the issue fully during the closed beta.

While this is exactly the point of a closed beta, it’s a positive sign for Sea of Thieves' PlayStation 5 launch. Even though the game is now over 5 years old, there is clearly a massive number of PlayStation users who have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to set sail and create their own pirate adventure.
