Vinsmoke Sanji, the dashing cook of the Straw Hat crew inOne Piece, is a fan-favorite character with his empathetic and charismatic demeanor. But beyond his charm and impressive combat skills, there’s an implication that a more ominous aspect of him recently caught the attention of fans. Upon closer analysis throughout the series, a chilling pattern has been found that suggests those who light his cigarette are doomed to meet a tragic end.
The creepy connection between Sanji and death is not immediately visible. Yet, the evidence is shocking, as some of the major characters who have lit Sanji’s cigarette have met ultimate deaths at certain points in the series. Even though sacrifice and loss are nothing new toOne Piece, the fact that these deaths occur after what appears to be a harmless act has given rise to a theory, suggesting that Sanji might be some kind of harbinger of death, with his cigarette having “death note” like power.

Recently, a video on YouTube by@Wafer-the-Doghas garnered significant attention within the fanbase which implies the hidden connection between Sanji’s cigarette and death. Although it’s a hypothesis, there are some interesting points to note from this notion.
The first instance of this dark connection occurs during the Alabasta arc, an important moment inOne Piecewhere Luffy’s crew encounters Portgas D. Ace. In their brief time together, Ace uses his Devil Fruit powers to casually light Sanji’s cigarette. The simple gesture, however, foreshadows a much grimmer fate. Needless to mention, Ace later met his end during the Battle of Marineford, sacrificing himself to save Luffy.
The next clue comes during episode 185 ofthe Skypiea arcwhen the Straw Hat Pirates find themselves on a mysterious island in the sky, ruled by the god-like Enel. Sanji confronts Enel and takes a 1,000-volt shock from Enel’s lightning-based powers. Surprisingly, the jolt indirectly lights Sanji’s cigarette, setting up a moment of dark irony. Although temporarily, later it was seen that Enel’s heart stopped beating, even though he managed to revive himself.

Pedro uses his own electric powers to light Sanji’s cigarette during a brief moment at Zou Island; a move that, looking back, seems to ensure his own fate. Later, Pedro sacrifices himself to protect the Straw Hats. Similar to Ace’s tragic end, his death seemed inevitable — as if his destiny was predetermined the instant he ignited Sanji’s cigarette.
Mere Coincidence or A Dark Theory?
It’s not the first time that Sanji’s ambiguous connection with death has surfaced within the fandom. In fact, at this point, it has been termed as an inside joke among theOne Piecefans. As@user-ok1mf1wu7uhilariously remarked,

So, is there something more sinister at play here? Could Sanji unknowingly be a harbinger of death for those who light his cigarette? Or is this merely a string of coincidences, bound together by the tragic nature of the world ofOne Piece?
