Why are my settings so important in Rocket League?
Ultimately, there’s no “incorrect” way to play Rocket League, but specific settings will make your life easier. Your settings are almost meaningless if you struggle to hit a ball straight, but you want every advantage you may get as you improve and climb the ranks.
Tuning your settings won’t immediately make you a betterRocket Leagueplayer, butit can give you a competitive edge. I’ll explain everything in detail, but visual flare takes a backseat to performance. You canbring up the Settings screen from the Main Menu.
Once your settings are dialed in, I urge you to stick with it. Aerial skills inRocket Leaguetake months of practice to learn and build muscle memory. You risk jeopardizing that if you’re constantly tinkering.
Here are the settings for each tab in the options menu, followed by an explanation for those who want to dive deep into competitiveRocket League.
While it’s not a setting per se, remember thatyour car choice is essential, as every vehicle has a unique hitbox.
I recommend using the default Octane until you’re experienced enough to have a reason not to.Rocket Leagueoffers some of thebest car customization in the genre, but consistency is important.
Camera Settings
Camera Settings dictate how the camera rests behind your car.Camera Shake is turned on by default, and while it looks stylish, it’s distracting. You’ll notice this theme throughout the guide, and if the setting doesn’t provide any competitive value, we usually switch it off.
We crank the Field of View (FoV) to its maximum value of 110, as you can see more on your peripheries. Your car appears slightly smaller as a trade-off, but it’s worth it for the extra intel.
Distance, Height, and Angle determine the position of the camera. This is a personal preference, but these settings ensure the camera is low enough behind the car for dribbling while also sufficient for aerials.
Swivel Speed is a big one as it governs how fast the camera turns when you look to your sides or behind you.
8 is snappy enough for competitive playwithout the movement feeling jarring.
Finally, Inverted Swivel is a personal preference, much like Inverted Aim in first-person shooters.

Controls Settings
These are prettycommon settings among pro players, and you’ll get used to them after a few games. The values may be lower than what you’re used to, but they allow for micro-adjustments and aerial accuracy.
The only setting you may want to change here is the Controller Deadzone.Your Controller Deadzone should be set as low as possible,but you may have to increase it if your controller has Stick Drift. Stick Drift is common on well-used controllers, and you want Deadzone settings to be as low as possible without unintended inputs.
An easy way to test this is to go into Training Mode and turn the Controller Deadzone to zero. If you notice the car dragging in any direction, increase the Deadzone setting until it doesn’t.
My controller is pretty old, and I find a dead zone of 0.10 works for me, but it’smore common to have this value closer to 0.05.
Interface Settings
Interface settings control your HUD and how information is relayed on the screen.Most of these can be left at default valuesand won’t affect your gameplay too much.
Video Settings
We make several impactful changes to our video settings. As this menu is split into sections, let’s go through them one at a time.
Window Settings
Full-screen display mode givesRocket Leaguethe highest priority on your system for the best performance. It’s usually best to switch Vertical Sync off butput it back on if you notice any screen tearing.

Anti-aliasing reduces jagged edges at the cost of performance.Rocket Leaguelooks fine with Anti-aliasing switched off, although we keep Render Quality high for sharper visuals.
Ideally,you want your FPS as high as possiblefor any competitive game. It’s not unusual to see pros playing with 200+ FPS, but it’s hardware-dependent.

We turn off many settings here to remove unnecessary visual flares that may be distracting. Things like Lens Flares and Motion Blur may add some visual spice, but they aren’t worth using if we aim to climb the ranks in competitive play.
Fortunately,Rocket League’svibrant color scheme means the game always looks good, even without the flashy effects.
As I mentioned at the start of the guide, these settings won’t immediately enable you to climb the ranks. However, they give yousolid foundations on which to play.
I recommend keeping your settings consistent while you’re learning, but there is no “one size fits all” combination. Pro players tend to use similar settings, but there is some leeway.
For example,Juicy, who’s an active pro player, prefers his FOV at 109. His camera choices are close to what I’ve recommended in this guide, but many of his settings are slightly different from the competition.
Feel free to experiment, but try not to deviate too much, as these values have proven effectiveness at the highest level.
It’s easy to get disheartened watching your opponents effortlessly fly across the stadium, butfocus on your own game, and the wins will come.
