In the modern Shonen scene, there are a ton of series that tend to follow a repetitive idea of featuring a main character who wants to become stronger and achieve their dreams. All the greats, likeOne Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, and so many more, feature the typical Shonen trait in their own unique way.

However, the major flaw following all these stories is how after one point of time the protagonist is overpowered, and fans know that they will eventually save the day.Dr. Stone’screators, writer Riichiro Inagaki and artist Boichi, saw this rising trend and decided to come up with a fresh concept that would mark a change in the genre.
Dr. Stone’screator explains why they wanted to change the modern Shonen scene
Believe it or not, the modern Shonen scene is plagued with the typical idea of following lofty goals, where one can achieve them by becoming the best version of themselves. Surely, this seems like sending a great message to its genre. But every genre of Shonen, be it sports, action, adventure, or fantasy, decided to pick on this idea and make it the core formula of the Shonen genre.
During an exclusive interview withAnime News Network, Riichiro Inagaki, one of the creators ofDr. Stone, addressed this issue as the interviewer asked about the“concept”or“specific event”that germinated this series.

‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’ Made a Huge Mistake by Bringing Vegeta Into the Picture Just to Give Him More Scenes With Bulma
In today’s entertainment landscape there’s a lot of Supermans and superheroes, and they can do everything. But, in reality most people are not like that. I thought about the average person. For the average person to accomplish something, you need to keep working and build up towards whatever your goal is. I think that’s cool, and wanted to write about that.
Inagaki-Sensei mentioned how he decided to follow the same idea and infuse it with a never-before-seen trope—a grounded idea of science and a dash of fantasy—thatgave birth to its protagonist, Senku.

I started wondering, “what’s a cool way to portray that average person working hard for their goal?” To amplify that idea of not being able to do anything was the idea of petrification; when you’re petrified, you’re able to’t do anything. But you can count in that situation. That’s what the main character, Senku does. He embodies the idea of working diligently by counting for a couple thousand years.
The series’ writer had mentioned in the interview how he was blown away by the scientific concepts as a kid, and at one point in time, he wanted to be a scientist himself.

His genius is shown in the show, where he lays down a scientific foundation and ensures that his work entertains its viewers. He added,
Maybe some other manga artists might be angry at me for that answer, but for me, as long as it’s entertaining and fun, that’s what I’m always aiming for.

Later, in the interview, he explained howDragon Quest Vinspired him with the petrification part that tends to add to the series’ popularity, making it stand apart from the masses, andreimagining the core ideas of the Shonen genre.
Inagaki-Sensei sheds light on how Senku is more than a protagonist
In the same interview, the interviewer asked Inagaki-Sensei about the most important character of his stellar work. He answered“Senku,”and explained it is because of how he maintains as well as develops his relationship with the people around him.
I would say everyone is a player in the story but if I had to name someone, it would be Senku. As I had previously touched upon, he moves everything forward. The important relationships are Senku as the central spoke and then whoever is around him at any given time because that then gives rise to a theme.
He added how the show is not primarily revolving around the characters, but adds to the overall theme.
And there are relationships between the non-Senku characters, so I guess you could say those are not as important because they don’t dictate the theme. Because it’s about Senku and those around him, online I’ll read reviews and comments that say, “Wow, Senku has a lot of partners,” but it’s because those relationships he has are important and core to the theme.
With the manga coming to an end in 2022, the series has garnered an immense fan following around the world as it tends to deviate from what has been made out of following the trend. As a result, it has become one of the most adored series that gives its fans the escapism they need from their daily mundane lives.
Dr. Stonecan be streamed on Hulu; meanwhile, the manga can be read on VIZ Media.
