TheResident Evilseries has been around since the mid-’90s and has gone through plenty of changes since its inception. But one thing that the series has always stayed true to is its terrifying bosses. Whether it’s giant leeches, terrifying zombies, or just straight-up monsters, Resident Evil knows how to create an imposing boss.

It’s fair to say that Resident Evil simply wouldn’t be the same without itshorrifying monstersand interestingly deranged characters. So, as the series puts such a strong emphasis on its bosses with each entry, we’ve decided to rank some of the best bosses in the series.

Krauser is a hard boss in both the original Resident Evil 4 and the remake. As Leon’s former commanding officer, Krauser knows a lot of your tricks and how to fight them. He also insists on fighting with knives, making gunplay difficult.

He’s not above shooting at you either. In the remake, Krauser uses traps, explosive arrows, and machine guns to dwindle your health before the final confrontation. It’s a good thing you’re able to parry, because, in his mutated form, Krauser’s melee attacks cleave through your health if one gets through.

9Queen Leech

In Resident Evil 0, Queen Leech takes the role of a recurring monster. This amalgamation of mutated human and leech flesh stalks Rebecca and Billy as they attempt to escape. In the game’s final fight, the Queen Leech is more than just a bullet sponge.

You fight this monster pressed for time as the facility you’re in counts down to self-destruct. Bullets won’t defeat the queen either as Billy must distract it while Rebecca opens the facility’s windows. The queen can’t survive in direct sunlight, so it’s a challenge to keep it occupied while defending Rebecca.

8Marguerite Baker

Marguerite is the creepy bug woman that makes everything go from bad to worse in Resident Evil 7. When you first meet Marguerite, she appears to be a normal-looking lady with bugs at her command, but the truth is much worse.

Marguerite is the biggest and creepiest bug in her swamp, and her boss fight is one of the scariest in years. Even putting aside her hurrying form, she scurries around an entire building to fight you, popping up when you least expect it.

7Osmond Saddler

The lead antagonist of Resident Evil 4 is one of the best-designed monsters in the series. Visually, Osmond Saddler appears as an unholy priest with almost supernatural powers, but once Leon removes the plagas parasite, you can fight him freely. Only then does he reveal his true form: a terrible spider monster able to leap across an entire oil rig with ease.

Saddler will take all of your agility and ammunition to beat. Like many Resident Evil bosses, his eyes are his weak points, but they’re placed in awkward positions that are difficult to hit. As you attempt to take him down, Saddler crawls towards you, cleaving with his spider legs as you try to scrounge up enough ammo to kill him.

6Jack Baker

Jack Baker appears in Resident Evil 7 as the relentless father of the Baker family. More than any other character, he hounds Ethan throughout the entire game. You fight him a few times throughout the course of the game, and each time is a tense challenge.

He has some of the most suffocating encounters. You normally fight him in enclosed spaces where escape is a distant dream. You have nowhere to go and little time to react. In those moments you can see his derangement on full display as he tries to kill you with various pieces of farming equipment.

5Mother Miranda

The final boss of Resident Evil 8 and its DLC, Mother Miranda is rightly the hardest challenge in the game. She also ventures deeper into the supernatural than most bosses, hurling fireballs at you, and shape-shifting. Her visual design is both impressive and imposing.

Mother Miranda uses her shape-shifting ability to create spears to skewer you with combo attacks, but her more dangerous ability is to disappear and reappear around her arena. Her wings aren’t just for show either; she can use them to fly out of range of your shotgun and be a mobile target. Narratively, it’s one of the best-executed boss fights in the series.

Capcom reimagined Mr. X for the Resident Evil 2 remake to be the hulking wall he was always meant to be. Mr. X shows up to pursue you in the police station where most of the game takes place, but he does chase Leon and Claire through the streets as well. All the while, he is almost completely immune to damage.

you may stun him, but beyond that, nothing you do hurts him. He, on the other hand, is quite good at hurting you. Blows from Mr. X chunk your health, and if you take his hat off he begins to lose his cool. If you’re playing as Leon, you have one final confrontation with Mr. X in the umbrella base.

3William Berkin

Another recurring enemy in Resident Evil 2 is William Berkin, the man responsible for the Raccoon City outbreak. He appears several times as you navigate through the game, growing more and more mutated as time goes on. He appears more in Claire’s route as her final boss.

Early on, Berkin is decently fast and can sneak up on you, but as he mutates, he gains more raw power. His second boss fight in particular can be easy or hard depending on when you can stun him. His final fight is very fun, as the game hands you a minigun to go wild.

Perhaps the most famous antagonist in Resident Evil, Wesker is the agent of Umbrella known for betraying you in Resident Evil 1. His influence is felt all over the series, and when he makes a direct appearance, you better be ready. Wesker appears human most of the time, but he can mutate into a monster at will.

In Resident Evil 5, Wesker fights you first in a mansion as he controls Jill, a former ally. He’s able to dodge your bullets and close in with hand-to-hand attacks. In his final boss fight, you’re trapped with him on an active volcano as he uses parts of a crashed helicopter as weapons.

In the Resident Evil 3 remake, Nemesis returns within the first few moments of the game’s introduction. From there until the end of the game, he will hunt you. His imposing size and deadly presence only reinforce the dread festering through Raccoon City.

In addition to pursuingJill, Nemesis has a few boss fights where you must fight for your life. The best part is Nemesis mutates after each lost fight, turning him more and more monstrous. As he grows, so do his challenges, and by the end, you need a railgun just to make a dent.
