While family secrets are often portrayed as dramatic plots in movies, actor Michael Caine’s life is a testament to the fact that those are inspired by real-life incidents. The British film icon’s career has earned the highest esteem with movies likeKing of Thieves, Educating Rita,andThe Cider House Rules.But he failed to discover the biggest family secret kept from him for most of his life.
Caine was already established as a prominent actor when he discovered the truth about his mother’s whereabouts on Sundays. The actor narrated that his mother secretly visited him every weekend but never allowed Caine to accompany her.

Michael Caine’s mother kept a secret for over half a century
A post on X recently highlighted an eye-opening incident that shaped the other half of the Academy Award winner’s life. According to the post shared by @fasc1nate,Michael Cainestumbled upon a dark secret after his mother’s death. His mother, Ellen Maria Burchell, would go out every Sunday claiming to visit the church or a cousin.
In reality, she was visiting Caine’s half-brother, David Burchell. He was epileptic and had suffered an unfortunate accident as a child which warranted him to be institutionalized as a mentally ill individual. However, Caine implied that Burchell appeared “lucid” and “aware.” A part of the post’s caption stated,
“The boy, Caine’s half-brother, had been born six years prior to the actor’s birth, when his mother had not yet married his father… When his mother died in 1989, Michael Caine found out about his half-brother… he began to visit him, too.”
The actor Michael Caine was already middle aged when he found out a rather dark secret about his family.

In his book,Blowing The Bloody Doors Off, the 90-year-old actor expressed his deep admiration for his mother and all the female figures in his life. After he found out about his mother’s long-kept secret, theBatman Beginsactor hailed her in the book. He wrote,
“It made her even more of a powerful woman. To have been able to have done that for this boy who was never going to get better, who was never going to be any advantage to her, or go to work, make any money or anything. She was incredible, my mother.”
Caine discovered his brother at 60, and only after his mother’s death. However, his mother’s passing away was not the end of his association with his half-brother. Caine took the responsibility to look after Burchell, helping him in whatever ways he could.

David Burchell was Michael Caine’s fan
Though the former English actor was completely unaware of his disabled brother until the age of 60, Burchell knew about him all this while. After Caine began visiting his brother, he found out that Burchell had treasured Caine’s pictures as a Hollywood star. The caption read,
“And he was surprised to see that his brother had pictures of him as an actor, which his mother had given him — the brother he never knew about, knew about him, and was a devoted fan.”

Caine took after his mother to take care of his brother, six years older than him, offering better medical treatments and a way of life. Unfortunately, Burchell passed away in 1991, two years after his mother, and Caine buried his ashes beside Ellen Maria Burchell’s. Despite the dark secret, Michael Caine transformed it into a wonderful memory with his acts of kindness and sensibility.
