After an entire game’s worth of build-up, the ability to use your trusted partner Miraidon in battle is perhaps one of the best momentsPokemon Violethas to offer. And, despite the time it spends inLow Power Mode, Miraidon is no slouch, pulling out all the stops to defend you and your friends from the rogueParadise Protection Protocol. Though that battle is scripted, you get a taste of Miraidon’s true strength — and it’s nothing to gawk at. Miraidon has dominated the competitive scene, with some thinking of banning Miraidon from Ubers — a feat accomplished by few. If you aim to use the Iron Serpent on your team, here’s what you should know.

Miraidon is anElectricandDragon-type Pokemon, with the abilityHadron Engine. Hadron Engine will summon Electric Terrain for 5 turns upon entering battle, as well as provide a 30% boost to Miraidon’s Special Attack while Electric Terrain is in effect (though it doesn’t have to be the terrain summoned by Hadron Engine). Its stats are great, as any legendary’s are, with a fantastic Special Attack and Speed and respectable Defensive bulk. The only real “weakness” Miraidon has is its below average Attack, though Miraidon doesn’t rely on its Attack, so this weakness is negligible.

Pokemon HOME has since opened its gates to Paldea, and a bunch of new Pokemon have entered the metagame. Despite these new additions, Miraidon currently still reigns supreme as one of the strongest Legendary Pokemon currently in the game. This guide has been updated to account for the several new threats it has to contend with - Zacian, Arceus-Ground, and Calyrex.
Miraidon’s Strength & Speed
Miraidon’s base 135 Speed allows it to outspeed many of theUber tier’s members, with the exception of its counterparts Koraidon, Flutter Mane, Iron Bundle, Chien-Pao, Regieleki, and Shadow Rider Calyrex. This can potentially be fixed with full Speed investment or a Choice Scarf, allowing Miraidon to move before its opponents and steal a kill - though some Pokemon are so fast that Miraidon may not be able to outspeed them. Speaking of kill, Miraidon is easily able to dominate the Uber tier with its Electric- and Dragon-type STAB; anything that can tank an Electro Drift is unable to take a Draco Meteor. These two moves allow Miraidon to obliterate many targets for a minimum of neutral damage. And, for extra coverage, Miraidon also has access to Overheat, a powerful Fire-type attack similar in function to Draco Meteor.
Electro Drift in particular is immensely powerful — a special 100 base power Electric-type move that increases its power by 33% if the target is weak to Electric-type attacks. This isn’t even keeping in mind the boosts Electro Drift receives from both Hadron Engine and Electric Terrain. Draco Meteor and otherDragon-type movescan hit many targets for a minimum of neutral damage — a Ground- and Fairy-type Pokemon would be a good counter for Miraidon, but sadly one does not yet exist as of writing this.
Miraidon’s Ability: Hadron Engine
Hadron Engine’s Electric Terrain is a fantastic opportunity to support the rest of your team — after all, you have five other Pokemon on your team to think about. Electric Terrain prevents Pokemon from falling asleep, nixing strategies like Spore Amoonguss. Electric Terrain also provides a boost to Electric-type moves — however, the notable benefit ofElectric Terrainis activating Miraidon’s fellow future Paradox Pokemon’s Quark Drive ability. However, one of Hadron Engine’s functions is what makes Miraidon so powerful: while Electric Terrain is active, Miraidon’s Special Attack is heightened by 30%. This boost ignores things like Unaware, so Miraidon has a huge amount of firepower at its disposal.
In the context of Ubers, Iron Bundle is a clear contender for potential support. Iron Bundle naturally outspeeds Miraidon with 136 base Speed, which can be augmented with Quark Drive. The ability to activate Quark Drive without wasting your item slot with Booster Energy can’t be understated; a Pokemon’s item slot is as important as what ability or moves it has. Freeing up Iron Bundle’s item slot can let it run Heavy Duty Boots, which allows Iron Bundle to safely switch in on Stealth Rocks, which Iron Bundle is weak to.

Miraidon’s Weaknesses & Counters
Despite Miraidon’s overwhelming firepower and speed, it’s not perfect. As stated earlier, a Ground- and Fairy-type Pokemon would be an ideal counter for Miraidon, though none currently exist. However, a good replacement can be found throughTerastalization.This play is somewhat risky, but terastalizing into a Ground- or Fairy-type when switching in to a Miraidon’s Electro Drift or Draco Meteor can get you a free turn to hit Miraidon, hopefully OHKOing it with an Earthquake or Play Rough, should you have those moves. Be wary, however, as Terastalization has many other potentially superior uses and there may be other ways to bring down the Paradox Pokemon.
Honestly, there aren’t many Pokemon around that can reliably counter Miraidon. Koraidon, its counterpart, does resist Electric-type attacks, but it falls to Miraidon’s Dragon STAB. Flutter Mane is fast and especially bulky, but the chances of your Flutter Mane even meeting Miraidon on the battlefield are slim depending on your matchup, and Miraidon’s Flash Cannon can crit through Flutter Mane’s defenses. Even Ting-Lu, with its massive HP and defenses, struggles against Miraidon’s Draco Meteor - though against certain sets, Ting-Lu may be able to weather Miraidon’s assault.
Miraidon’s Best Builds
Now that we know Miraidon is well and truly cracked, how can we take that and use it to our advantage? Miraidon iscurrently banned by official Pokemon rulesand resides in the Uber tier in Smogon. As a result, you should expect to play against fellow Ubers, so the following builds will be made with that in mind.
Miraidon @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Hadron Engine
Tera Type: Dragon / Water
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Modest/Timid
- Draco Meteor
- Electro Drift
- Overheat / Tera Blast
This build is fairly self-explanatory. Maxed out Special Attack, Speed, and a bit of Special Defense for good measure.Electro DriftandDraco Meteorcover most threats you’ll face, and you canuse U-Turn to gain momentumif necessary. Tera Water Tera Blast lets you hit Ground-types for super-effective damage, and Tera Water affords defensive utility against Gholdengo or Iron Treads. Speaking of, Overheat can also be used to beat Steel-types without needing to Terastallize.
Miraidon @ Choice Specs
Tera Type: Dragon / Fairy / Electric
Nature: Timid
- Overheat
- U-Turn / Volt Switch
If you wantoverwhelming power, this is the build you want. ThoughChoice Specslocks you into your first attack, the +50% bonus to your Special Attack cannot be understated. With both Choice Specs and Hadron Engine, Miraidon can have aSpecial Attack stat of719right out the gate, which you can take advantage of to quickly steamroll your opponents. And, if you do need to switch out, you can use U-Turn or a STAB-poweredVolt Switch. Just watch out for Ground types.
Miraidon @ Leftovers
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 Spe
Nature: Modest
- Parabolic Charge / Electro Drift
- Dazzling Gleam / Dragon Pulse
- Calm Mind
Looking for a moredefensive buildfor Miraidon? Look no further. Though you may need to hide behind a bulky Pokemon to get the turns you need for set-up, Miraidon can play the part of unbreakable wall exquisitely. With Calm Mind and Agility, Miraidon can take hits and outspeed faster threats even with little Speed investment. Parabolic Charge helps Miraidon heal alongside Leftovers, and a Tera-boosted Dazzling Gleam can help take out threats like Chi-Yu or Chien-Pao.
