The Pokemon Company has revealed the first new Mega Evolution that will be appearing inPokemon Legends: Z-A, and it’s a total abomination, spelling bad things for any others that will be appearing in the game.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A marks thereturn of the Mega Evolution mechanic, which has been absent from the mainline games since Gen 7. Mega Evolution allows existing Pokemon to temporarily take on new forms in battle, providing a stat boost and maybe a new Ability that makes them much stronger.

You’ll be able to play the newest Pokémon Legends game sooner than you think.

A new trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A was revealed during the July 2025 Pokemon Presents event, which included the first reveal of a new Mega Evolution, as all of the others shown so far debuted in earlier games. Unfortunately, the design of this new Mega Evolution leaves a lot to be desired.

Mega Dragonite Needs More Time In The Oven

Mega Dragonite is thefirst new Mega Evolutionrevealed in years. Its design incorporates elements of its predecessors, with wings on its head, shoulders, and legs, as well as a pearl on its tail, which references Dragonair.

Unfortunately, these additions look terrible, as if they just stuck extra bits onto Dragonite without thinking of its overall appearance. This sticks to The Pokemon Company’s style in Gen 9, where Tera Types just involved putting a big crystal hat and a gem-like skin over an existing character model.

Pokémon Legends Z-A Night Battle in Lumiose City

Dragonite is one of themost popular Pokemonin the franchise, dating all the way back to the days ofPokemon Red & Blue. The fact that it received such a lazy Mega Evolution is a huge shame, considering how popular it is among the fans.

Chances are, there are other Mega Evolutionscoming to Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Hopefully, they won’t look as slapdash as poor Mega Dragonite, who has been cursed with his extra form.
