The gaming community lost its marbles after Sony Interactive Entertainment officially unveiled the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 collection and for good reason. The aesthetic approach took them a trip down memory lane after the gaming company patterned the color scheme from the original console from 30 years ago. Naturally, those with money to burn will be first in line to secure a pre-order but the journey to secure these rare and highly sought-after gaming items is far from easy.

The 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 collection

It would make sense for the pre-order phase to be cut-throat, especially with scalpers lurking around to resell these items for twice and even four times the original price which is criminal. Casual consumers are left with no choice but to bite the bullet and give these scalpers the price they set which is a bad look for Sony Interactive Entertainment releasing a limited edition bundle.

The Pre-orders for the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 Collection Were Short-Lived Thanks to Scalpers

Sony Interactive Entertainment knows how to rattle cages and excite the gaming community with its products. Fans anticipated something was coming for the 30th anniversary, and the gaming company did not disappoint but did; however, let down the hardcore fans by securing one from the official site after selling out immediately. The few who got through the official site to secure a pre-order should count themselves lucky and safeguard their orders whereas scalpers will be on the prowl to get even more of these PlayStation 5 models with the intent to resell them for a higher price.

It sounds like a great business idea but the ethics are thrown out entirely. Sony knew fans would want to get their hands on these PlayStation 5 consoles and were willing to pay a few extra bucks for the standard and Pro versions; unfortunately, only 12,300 models globally and most of these are already in the hands of scalpers. Sony failed to learn its lesson the hard way and forgot how the early days of the PlayStation 5 became a struggle for the general consumer since scalpers secured most of the items and intended to resell them for twice the price. The scalping issue gave rival companies like Nintendo some pause andplan to avoid repeating the same mistake.

Limited edition PS5

Limited editions can disappear in a blink of an eye and some of them are worth it. Sony released a limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro, and it was pure eye candy. Some fans would argue thatthis limited edition console is much betterthan the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 collection which is a compliment of the highest order. If superheroes like Tony Stark can learn from his past mistakes for self-improvement, Sony is a slow learner and continues to repeat the same old mistakes.

Old habits die hard and it appears that Sony Interactive Entertainment does not seem bothered by the outcry of its loyal consumer base from losing out to scalpers as long as they can sell all 12300 units and move on. The gaming community will be left with no choice but to purchase these limited edition consoles and allow these scalpers to win in life which is unfair and extremely unethical. Sony is a slow learner and fails to learn its lesson the hard way until the backlash is too much to bear.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Does Not Mind Repeating the History of the Playstation 5 Launch Four Years Ago

Gaming consoles are inherently expensive and the limited edition bundles are much more to a certain degree. While they all function the same, these PlayStation 5 units hold a special place in the history of the PlayStation brand. People with enough money to spare will likely want to secure these items and gain a sense of accomplishment knowing there are only a handful of people with these rare items in their collection.

Sony should have anticipated the scalping problem after having experienced it four years ago when the base model of the PlayStation 5 launched. The gaming company should have prepared countermeasures to combat scalping and give the loyal player base a decent chance to secure a pre-order fairly. Rather than this limited edition console being a commemoration of how far the PlayStation brand has reached, this will be remembered as scalpers ruining it.

The high demand and limited supply of these consoles contribute to their desirability, and Sony Interactive Entertainment has remained committed to its intended sales figures. However, with a global fanbase exceeding 12300, many are reluctant to pay the exorbitant prices set by scalpers, especially given the already steep original cost.

Tony Stark is not perfect but has been through a lot to realize some habits needed to change for growth and the executives at Sony could not care less. There should be some countermeasures to protect the consumer base from falling into the jaws of scalpers. Some fans thought the company learned from the PlayStation 5 launch but it doesn’t seem to be the case.
