The villains ofOne Piecehave nuanced backstories and personalities that create a complicated relationship with the fan community but there’s one villain deeply hated by most fans. Blackbeard is notorious for his terrible actions throughout the series, going toe to toe with Akainu. He’s a cowardly pirate who has never truly worked for the accolade of acquiring the two Devil Fruits that he possesses at the moment. He only waited for convenience to strike in his favor but never chased his goals. This trait is his undoing, the reason why, despite being powerful, he doesn’t have Conqueror’s Haki.
Several characters of his caliber withinOne Piecehave Conqueror’s Haki, including villains like Donquixote Doflamingo and Kaidou. The character doesn’t have to be good to have Conqueror’s Haki. It is a projection of one’s will onto others and cannot be unlocked through training.
Shanks or Garp might be the strongest Conqueror’s Haki user in the series, not including the late Gol D. Roger. So why does Blackbeard not have it, despite being one of the most ambitious characters inOne Piece?
Blackbeard’s Treachery Is Why He Doesn’t Deserve Conqueror’s Haki
From the beginning, it’s been established how much of a traitor Blackbeard is. His carefully crafted persona led the Whitebeard Pirates to believe he was on their side when all he wanted was to learn the ropes from Whitebeard. His true intention was to find the Yami Yami no Mi all along with the hopes it would show up traveling with an Emperor. While that did come true, the pirate did not have to kill Thatch, a fellow crewmate, to acquire the Devil Fruit.

This wasn’t the last of it, especially when he gave Portgas D. Ace to the Marines, leading to his execution. Then during Marineford, he stole Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit and took it for himself,acquiring another one without any work. This display of treachery and how he goes about is also why he doesn’t have Conqueror’s Haki.
He doesn’t chase after his goals, he stays put and almost relies too much on other people weakening his opponents. He completely backs down when faced with a stronger one, like he did with Sengoku and Silvers Rayleigh. He doesn’t have the will to fight, unlike Luffy or Shanks.
Waiting for others to achieve your goals isn’t what bestows characters with Conqueror’s Haki. The will to chase after them is what makes a king, something we see in the users. However, Blackbeard just swoops in like a vulture to take what others have. Some fans might say it’s patience but his actions are nothing but conniving.
What Makes Blackbeard’s Patience Different From Shanks?
What sets Shanks apart from Blackbeard in terms of patience is simple:we don’t know what the Red-Haired Emperor’s objectivesare at all. He’s a mystery while being one of the most active pirates inOne Piece.He stole the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika for reasons we don’t know, got toMarineford with sheer speedand stopped the Summit War, and countless others.

Shanks might be waiting a million years to acquire the One Piece but he’s been much more active. He’s also a former Roger Pirate who might have a motive behind waiting this long since he probably does know the true nature of it. Blackbeard, on the other hand, has no real excuse.
