Obsidianis a gaming giant to many, and I wish I had the same reverence for them that countless people do. I seeFallout: New Vegasas a good game, but the sheer amount of branching options made it often feel bloated to me. More overwritten than well-written (not a popular opinion, I know).

The Outer WorldsI enjoyed more. The branches felt less obtuse, and it had more interesting characters. That said, I’ve never been sure I actuallylikedthe game, and that’s all due to how very little the combat did anything for me.

But their next game,Avowed, may just give me what I want.

This Huge RPG Has The Most Complex Dungeons Ever, So I Tried To Conquer One

I write a diary of my attempt to conquer one of the infamous dungeons of The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall.

The Outer Worlds didn’t have combat as strong as its dialogue. It was a straightforward first-person shooter where I never even noticed the alleged buffs my skills claimed. I held down a button to get better shots, and all my shipmates had a special move that feltexactlythe same. There weren’t any experiments to try, no extra choices to spice up the combat.

So I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the Developer Direct and saw Avowed’s combat. It showcased multiple examples of specific loadouts you would be able to do, and those loadouts can also be saved for quick switching. Each loadout was given a rundown of how you’d be using them, and none of these descriptions felt copy-pasted like the combat of Outer Worlds.

Freezing enemies and shattering them, quick wand strikes for mid-range foes, and classics such as blocking attacks or using heavy attacks for tougher foes. You have to think about what you’re doing and understand your chosen combat styles to win. But,you’re still free in how you go about that. The combat looks polished, rife for experimentation, and balanced to encourage multiple playstyles.

Wizard Duel At High Noon

The one that truly won me over was how you can choose to wield a wand in each hand, spamming spells like they’re bullets coming out of six-shooters. This alone just felt so unique, such a genius way for players to play around with magic combat. It spoke to me, and it’s something Ihaveto do when the game comes to Game Pass.

Obsidian are talented writers, but combat’s always been a bit of a blind spot for them. Avowed looks to correct that, offering me the combat that would have made me love The Outer Worlds, instead of ponder if I even liked it. I look forward to seeing just what my wizard will do.
