Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios,Helldivers 2has been a massive success since its launch in February earlier this year. The game’s co-op multiplayer and its main idea of spreading democracy through the universe is one of the main things that got fans hooked.

And while there have been requests from fans for a story mode, the studio’s new CEO, Shams Jorjani, has firmly put the idea to rest.
In a recent social media interaction, Jorjani responded to a fan question on X, stating that adding a story mode to the game is a step that the studio isn’t equipped to take, since it would be like making a whole new game.

Helldivers 2‘s Unexpected and Tremendous Success
Helldivers 2was not a game that had a lot of hype around it because it was a largely unknown name for audiences. But since its release, the game has gotten a tremendous amount of sales on PlayStation and PC while also kicking off one of the most active communities in any game.
Its success can easily be attributed to its refreshing co-op gameplay that brings thousands of players together, especially so with its narrative of a galactic rebel war.

Not happening. Sorry bro. That’s like building an entirely new game.

Considering just how successful and just how much player engagementHelldivers 2has gotten, the demand for a story mode in the game is understandable.
With the game’s co-op environment and the narrative of liberating the universe and spreading democracy on different planets, a story mode would make sense. The little lore tidbits that players get leave a lot of potential.

But Jorjani’s “not happening. Sorry bro,” response onXwas very definitive. While he didn’t go into details, it does show the significant effort that would be required to implement something like this, including new mission types, NPCs, voice lines, animations, and AI.

In comparison though, other games likeWarhammer 40K: Space Marine 2use their story and narrative as their biggest selling points. These narrative-driven experiences cater to players who enjoy deep, immersive storytelling.
Helldivers 2‘s decision to remain a multiplayer-focused game sets it apart but also limits its appeal to those seeking a single-player campaign.
Why a Story Mode ForHelldivers 2Can’t Be In The Works Right Now
Creating a story mode would put an additional load on the company, which will require significant playtesting and balance. Arrowhead’s testers are already working hard to fine-tune the game’s weapons, animations, and user interface features.
Right. It’s done on our end, but we want to find the right time to release it.

If you’re one of the fans who really wants a story mode, you may be disappointed. But there is a small comfort. In a different social media interaction onXFormer CEO Johan Pilestedt was asked about the progress on the “Review Bomb” capes. These capes were announced after the game’s fiasco with the whole PSN linking controversy.
Saber Interactive’s upcomingWarhammer 40k: Space Marine 2will allegedly bea challenger forHelldivers 2with the game also slated to having its own co-op multiplayer experience. And with Warhammer already being a franchise that is heavily focused on lore beats, it may just dethroneHelldivers 2.
Arrowhead is likely focusing its efforts on maintaining and improving the existing multiplayer experience. And so even if there was going to be a story mode, it will be far down the line.

And so, while Arrowhead may not be looking to expand theHelldivers 2experience with a story mode, fans shouldn’t be discouraged. The game’s excellent co-op multiplayer and its already existing narrative still provide great content.
