One of the many aspects that caught players’ attention in the reveal trailer was one of the dual protagonists, Yasuke. Based on Japan’s first black Samurai, the character has been a topic of discussion in the last couple of days, with players wanting to know even more. In an official video by Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed’s boss finally gave us a detailed breakdown of Yasuke’s character.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Boss Breaks Down Yasuke’s Character in Shadows

There’s no doubt that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year. The title is set to be a monumental iteration of the legendary Ubisoft series, particularly as fans have been requesting an AC game set in Japan for several years. While Mirage just scratched an ick last year, it’s been four whole years since players experienced an epic, large-scale AC Game. The company has finally unveiled Assassin’s Creed Shadows, with a brand-new CGI trailer.

Unlike previous games, where players choose between a male or female protagonist, Shadows brings two completely different characters. One of them isYasuke, who was, historically, Japan’s first black Samurai. While some players are frustrated with Ubisoft not opting for a full Japanese cast, most of the community is thrilled to see an actual Japanese legend making it the AC franchise.

In an official video by Ubisoft, the game’s associate narrative director, Brooke Davies, breaks Yasuke’s character and Ubisoft’s approach to portray him best.

Just like all the previous Assassin’s Creed titles, the studio has gone for a research and history-first approach for Yasuke in Shadows. Although not much is known about Japan’s legendary black Samurai, he set foot in Japan in 1579, which is exactly when the game’s timeline began.

Davies reveals that Yasuke had relationships with some of the most “interesting” people, including Oda Nobunaga, the Portuguese, and the Jesuits. This enticed the developers to come in and unravel Yasuke’s story using their own approach. The developers believe that he’s the perfect protagonist for the Shadows, as just like the player, Yosuke is also discovering Japan.

Leaks have already revealed that Yasuke’s characterin Shadows differs comparatively from the real-life legend. In Shadows, he’ll play the role of an enslaved person going across the ocean with a ship when an unknown force attacks him. In the battle, he loses everyone, including his lover. However, Yasuke is rescued and taken to Japan, where he learns the way of Samurais.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Coming Soon

Ever since the series was initially launched in 2008, fans have been asking for a game set in Feudal Japan. After 16 years, Ubisoft finally answered the community’s prayers, with Shadows taking us there.

“Why not have actual Japanese Samurai”: Fans Riot Over Yasuke, The World’s First Black Samurai, Possibly Becoming the Protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows first leaked in 2022 as “Codename” Red. Like Valhalla, Odyssey, and Origins, Shadows is an open-world RPG, not Mirage’s small player-driven narrative. Shadows will launch later this year on June 22, 2025. It’s surely an exciting time to be an Assassin’s Creed fan.
