Fighting games having guest characters isn’t something new. We’ve had Link being a part of theSoul Caliburroster for the GameCube version of the game, Akuma inTekken 7, or DLC characters like Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui inStreet Fighter 6.
While some characters are more fitting than others, we recently got to witness real-world figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and Salvatore Ganacci joinFatal Fury: City of the Wolves. And with the newVirtua FighterProject in the making, there is a lot of potential for interesting collaborations.
However, a recent interview with the developers reveals that they currently have different plans for the game.
New Virtua Fighter To Focus On Bringing Out The World To The Players
In recent talks withGiant Bombat EVO, Riichiro Yamada, the Game Designer and Producer at SEGA, was asked if there is a possibility that other Sega characters could make their way into the new game, or if it will be focused on the Virtua Fighter World.
The translator replied: “So he doesn’t really have any plans right now, but as they are in the process of developing this new series, this new Virtua Fighter Project series, he really wants to bring out this new Virtua Fighter world and stage. Bringing that out to the users is the most important.”
Yamada continued, through his interpreter, to say that “there could be characters emerging in a stage, you know, surprisingly. Um, but it would be within the VF the Virtua Fighter, the world right now. So, when it does come to, you know, bringing other characters into the Virtua Fighter games, the priority is not up there. It’s like pretty low right now, but that’s why he has no plans right now.”
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the developers behind Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., have the popularYakuzaseries under them. On top of that, SEGA holds the rights to thePersonaseries and someShenmuegames. If things change, there is a chance characters like Kazuma Kiryu, Ren Amamiya, orRyo Hazukicould be added to the game.
However, the thing to note is they said “emerging in a stage,” so whether they will be playable or just appear in the background as some easter egg is something only time can tell. For now, the game’s combat gameplay trailer is out.
But if you are looking forward to more details about the new Virtua Fighter Project, you will have to wait till their next reveal at Tokyo Game Show 2025.
